Here at Regent Antiques we firmly believe that there is nothing more important than lighting when designing a modern or indeed a period style interior. We stock many different types and styles of lighting and we are confident that we will have something to meet your lighting requirements for both indoor and outdoor use.

Whilst some lighting is simply functional, there is also a lot of it which is there to provide atmosphere and ambience and to emphasise other design elements of an interior, such as wall surfaces and textures, or indeed an exterior in some cases. Please also see our range of lighting that may be used outside, including some very fine bronze statues converted for use as lamps and other bronze lighting pieces.

Our range of antique lamps and antique lighting pieces is carefully chosen to include examples for all of your lighting requirements and the contemporary and vintage pieces are representative of the styles in which they have been made.

When planning a new interior, or enhancing an existing one, have a look at our range of lighting and check back regularly because we are introducing new items all the time to replace those which are sold. If you see an item of antique lighting that you like, don’t delay, as these sell quickly and are often difficult to replace.

We stock a wide range of lighting, including candlesticks and candelabra, as well as many other types of lamp and lighting accessories.

Another very popular and much sought after type of lighting is the chandelier and you will usually find a variety of these in our London showroom, in a range of popular antique and vintage styles including Antique French Louis XIV Style, French Regency style, Venetian style and Art Nouveau - well worth the trip if you can possibly make it. Antique chandeliers vary in terms of size and style and we always aim to have examples in stock to meet all needs and budgets.

Another popular category of lighting item is the table lamp and, once again, our showroom is a treasure trove for anyone who is considering acquiring a vintage or antique table lamp.

In fact, we are very strong in lighting and a trip to our showrooms will often be the only one you need to make, so please use the website to create a shortlist and then, if you can, come and see for yourself just how varied our selection of antique and period lighting is.

Antique Pair French Ormolu Cherub Candelabra Table Lamps C1870

Antique Pair French Ormolu Cherub Candelabra Table Lamps C1870

Dating from around 1870 this pair of antique table lamps started life as ormolu candelabra and were converted to table lamps at a later date. This magnificent pair of antique table lamps are wonderfully decorated with fabulous gilt bronze foliate scrolls and playful seated cherubs who are draped with flowers against the fabulous ormolu lamp bases. These antique table lamps are incredibly decorative and will add a luxury and glamour to any room in which they are placed. The modelling and craftsmanship is truly fantastic and standing at 75cm (2 feet, 5 inches) they are eye catching and sure to become a talking point. The use of cherubs in art and decorative objects has a long and fascinating history. Cherubs such as those depicted on this pair of antique table lamps were ‘invented’ by artists such as Raphael during the Italian Renaissance to show male babies or toddlers to represent the presence of pure love around people. Called ‘putti’ (coming from the Latin word puttus meaning “boy), they were often depicted with wings like angels. About the same time the classical god of love, Cupid also started to be depicted as a baby or young child often with angelic wings as well. The association of ‘putti’ with cherubim angels was a small leap as both were concerned with love and purity and so the word ‘cherub’ began to refer not only to the angels but also ‘putti’. However, in reality there is a great deal of difference between these romantic and playful cherubs and the rank of angels known as cherubim. The latter are depicted in the Bible as fiercely strong and exotic creatures with multiple faces, wings and eyes, very different from those depicted on this pair of antique table lamps. These antique table lamps are in really excellent condition as can be seen from the in-depth selection of photographs we have provided for you to look at. They have been fully cleaned and professionally rewired in our workshops so you can be assured that they are in full working order. You can see many more bronzes here and more lighting items here. Antique Pair Regency Style Ormolu Wall Lights Appliques 19th C

Antique Pair Regency Style Ormolu Wall Lights Appliques 19th C

This fantastic pair of Regency style twin branch antique ormolu wall lights date from the late 19th century. Featuring classical Regency elements, this fabulous pair of antique ormolu wall lights have anthemion, classical urn and palmette cast backplates that issue forth twin reeded scrolled branches. Originally designed as candelabra, they were later adapted for the use of electricity. The Regency style has had many revivals. The original era is commonly defined as spanning a period of about forty years from around 1795 to 1837 and is named after the Prince Regent who ruled as proxy for his father, George III until his death in 1820 and then took over as George IV. The period was one of great achievement and cultural refinement in Britain and furniture and interior design incorporated the motivations and inspirations of the Prince Regent who favoured the classical design of ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt. This pair of antique ormolu wall lights shows off many of the elements of Regency style including the use of classical urns and the palmette or anthemion. Ormolu is a technique for coating bronze, brass, copper or other metals with gold. The original process involved coating the item in an amalgam of finely ground high-cart gold and mercury and then firing this in a kiln. The mercury would ‘burn off’ in the process leaving the metal beautifully gilded with the gold. The process had to be changed with the use of Mercury being banned in the 1830s and it was replaced with the electroplating method, which is the one used today. This pair of antique ormolu wall lights have been created using the latter method. They are in excellent condition having been cleaned and fully rewired and PAT tested. You can see the condition of this pair of antique ormolu wall lights for yourself by taking a few moments to review the photographs. Explore our range of antique and period lighting here. Some Advice on Purchasing Antique, Vintage and Second-Hand Silver Selecting antique and second-hand silver is a huge subject which includes work by some of the best master goldsmiths who were globally renowned artists in their own right down to the most practical and routine of machine-made everyday domestic ware. In thinking about acquiring this pair of silver plated candelabra we are happy to offer a few pointers that can help you make up your mind on what exactly is best for you. Highly cherished for thousands of years, silver has special attributes that have made it both gorgeous and collectible and consequently many people have amassed and used it in a variety of different varieties. There is a substantial volume of antique, vintage and second-hand silver around available on the market today. So how do you know what to go for? The foremost principle is that you need to invest in what you actually like. Give some focus to the reason you like this pair of silver plated candelabra and if it appeals to your aesthetic feeling then why wait? Authorities always say that you should go after the very best you can afford, and this does not necessarily mean the oldest or indeed the largest. If you love a particular piece of silver such as this pair of silver plated candelabra you will want to display it to friends and family and your enjoyment will translate to them too. A key question is the condition of a silver item and how much renovation work has been done. When selecting silver antiques that are over 200 years old they will probably have what is called a 'patina' which is a combination of the colour and the wear. You cannot expect an old silver article to appear as if it just came from the workshop - if it does then it has almost certainly been significantly restored which is not ideal for an item of antique silver. Bear in mind that in the silver antiques world a small bit of restoration is acceptable where a small ding or dent may be carefully removed. But be warned of over plating, lead or silver solder, repaired seams, holes, erased inscriptions, patches and later enhancements or adornments. All of these are unacceptable for a piece of fine antique silver. Happily here at Regent Antiques we are cautious and offer only the finest unblemished silver pieces and if things like re-plating has been done we will tell you. We always supply ample pics of our silver pieces so you can see precisely what condition they are in. Do take a few seconds to look at the images for this pair of silver plated candelabra to satisfy yourself of its condition. If you have any concerns about it you are always very welcome to call or email us. We will be delighted to put your mind at rest about the condition of this pair of silver plated candelabra. You should know that silver tarnishes and you will have to care for it by polishing it moderately frequently. It's a good idea to clean it with a long term polish and then then try to showcase it in a relatively airtight cupboard if you possibly can. This will keep it shining for the greatest possible time. If you look after it well this pair of silver plated candelabra will essentially last forever.

Antique Pair Large Empire Ormolu Bronze Candelabra C1860

Antique Pair Large Empire Ormolu Bronze Candelabra C1860

Dating from around 1860, this is an exquisite large antique pair of dark patinated bronze and gilded ormolu five light, four branch Empire candelabra. Each of these candelabra is cast as a classical muse and stands on canted square plinths cast with acanthus. This beautiful pair of bronze candelabra are in elegant Empire style, a neoclassical style prevalent in France during the first part of the 19th century. We bought these on our last buying trip to Montpelier. Condition These ormolu bronze candelabra are in excellent original condition. Please check the photographs for confirmation of this. More About Empire Style The Empire style that these ormolu bronze candelabra are typical of, was an early 19th century design movement that spanned not only the decorative arts and furniture, but also architecture and the visual arts in Europe and America. The style originated in France during the reign of Napoleon I taking its name from the First French Empire where it was intended to idealize Napoleon’s leadership. It corresponds to the Regency style in England, the Biedermeier style in German-speaking lands and the Federal style in the United States. The overall design ethic was based on aspects of the Roman Empire and is considered the second phase of neoclassicism which was so popular throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries. Motifs draw heavily from ancient Greek and Roman symbols and ornamentation, as is the case with these dark patinated bronze and gilded ormolu candelabra which display figures of the Muses, ancient Greek goddesses. More About Ormolu Ormolu is the 18th century English term used to describe the French method for gilding bronze with a fine gold veneer. Involving coating the item with a mercury amalgam containing high-carat fine powdered gold, the item would then be fired in a kiln ensuring the mercury was driven off leaving the golden gilt surface. However, the method using mercury was outlawed in France in the 1830s, due to the toxic nature of mercury. In more modern times electroplating was used to gild bronze and other metals, although some authorities believe that the mercury method produced a better quality finish.
