Stunning Bespoke Handmade 14ft Marquetry Burr Walnut Dining Table

A fabulous hand made bespoke burr walnut and floral marquetry 14ft dining table. It is made from burr walnut which  has a beautiful grain and to highlight the grain it has been expertly French polished in our workshops.  The table has four  leaves which can be added or removed as required to suit the ocassion by a special double wind out mechanism. When completely wound in and the leaves are all removed the table is transformed into a 150cm ( 5Ft ) diameter dining table.  The table is raised on six elegantly carved legs that give the table its superb stability, and they terminate in brass cap castors. The table features exquisite hand cut marquetry decoration and these regal decorations include bouquets of flowers, vases, swirls and geometric designs. This table would also be appropriate for a conference room, but whatever its function, it will make a profound impact on your guests and will receive the maximum amount of attention wherever it is placed Please note that the chairs in the photographs are not included in the price but are available to purchase if required. Condition: This is a new bespoke handmade table.   The making of a marquetry masterpiece The making of a bespoke marquetry dining table involves many phases - carried out with the highest level of attention to detail - by third generation master craftsmen in our workshop in Italy. First the design of the marquetry is drawn on paper. The paper is then glued on to a sheet of plywood and the veneers are attached to the underside with pins. There can be a maximum of 16 sheets of veneer.  In this case, there are 8 for the burr walnut and 8 for the marquetry. With a fret cutter, using a very fine blade, the marquetry is cut out, using the burr walnut and various coloured veneers to compose the flowers. Today we use an electric fret cutter, although in the 18th and 19th centuries the cutters were operated by treadles. All of the cut out pieces of veneer are then placed on a large tray. They are then singed by being placed in hot sand in a red hot crucible. This singed effect gives different shades to the various veneers, depending on how deep and how long they are left in the hot sand. The various items of veneer are then inserted into the burr walnut one by one. After they are inserted, tape is placed over them to keep them in place. They are then turned over and a sheet of glued paper is placed over them all, after which the tape can be removed. The prepared solid mahogany table is then veneered with mahogany - twice on the under side, horizontally and vertically, and then once on the top side. The prepared marquetry and burr walnut sheet is then placed on top and the whole table top is placed into a hot press, which glues the sheet to the top. The backing paper can then be sanded off. The table top is then veneered 4 times to prevent the top from bowing or warping. Once the assembly is complete, the table is French polished by hand using natural products, resulting in a stunning bespoke masterpiece of marquetry.

Bespoke 7ft Diameter Flame Mahogany Jupe Dining Table 21st C

Bespoke 7ft Diameter Flame Mahogany Jupe Dining Table 21st C

This is a beautiful bespoke contemporary flame mahogany Regency style 'Jupe' dining table which can seat eight people in great comfort and can accomodate ten when required.  We make this to order so we can make it to your bespoke size, finishes and specifications. The flame mahogany veneers on the top have been arranged so as to give a sunburst effect and it is finished off by the elegant crossbanding on the outside edge. The table is very solid as there is circular base with four columns which give the table its superb stability, raised on four splayed legs terminating in brass castors.   There are slides that pull out from the sides of the table and you fit the leaves on them by placing them on the slides and securing them with brass clips, which are located on the underside of the leaves.     This fascinating table illustrates all the very best elements of English cabinet-making combined with the remarkable burst of inventiveness of the Industrial Revolution. It was not until John Johnstone and Robert Jupe patented their ingenious design in March 1835 for an expanding round table, that round dining tables, which had suffered from the problem of not offering flexibility of seating, could compete with the established rectangular extending dining tables.   There is no mistaking the fine craftsmanship of this handsome table, which is certain to become a treasured addition to your furniture collection, and a talking point with guests at meal times.   The matching set of  chairs shown in the photographs are available for sale if required or please see our website for other options.   Condition: In excellent condition, please see photos for confirmation of condition.

Antique 12ft Victorian Flame Mahogany D End Extending Dining Table 19th C

Antique 12ft Victorian Flame Mahogany D End Extending Dining Table 19th C

This gorgeous extendable Victorian mahogany dining table dates from around 1870 and can comfortably seat up to fourteen people when fully extended. The Victorian mahogany dining table has D-ends and could equally well be used as a conference table. It has the four original extension leaves which measure approximately 50 cm (1 foot 8 inches) each and which can be added or removed to extend the table as required. This makes it an extremely flexible addition to any furniture collection. It stands on four wonderfully elegant carved and turned legs that each end in stylish brass and porcelain castors which means it can easily be positioned in any part of a room or moved between rooms with relative ease making this Victorian mahogany dining table a very useful and flexible furniture item. At full length it measures approximately 356cm (12 feet) which means it would also make a superb conference table as well. The carving on the legs is wonderfully executed with a crossed leaf motif. Flame mahogany is a superb wood for making furniture as Thomas Sheraton, the renowned 18th Century furniture designer and maker testified to when he said of mahogany “it has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed.” The flame figure of the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of a branch at the point where it meets another element of the tree. The colour of the wood is such that it radiates warmth leading to the idea of ‘flame’ mahogany. This can be particularly seen in this gorgeous Victorian mahogany dining table. This lovely table has been lovingly restored in one our workshops and is in excellent condition. This can be seen from the array of photographs we have made available in our gallery. Antique 11 ft Flame Mahogany Extending Dining Table

Antique 11 ft Flame Mahogany Extending Dining Table c.1840

It is our great pleasure to be able to offer for sale this magnificent antique dining table dating from the early Victorian period around 1840. Hand-crafted from flame mahogany this extendable antique dining table can comfortably seat ten people and perhaps fourteen at a stretch. It has four leaves which can be added or removed to vary the length of the table. This makes it an extremely flexible piece of furniture which can be adapted to suit many different types of occasion. This gorgeous antique dining table is also wide enough to comfortably accommodate two people sitting at each end when it is fully extended or making a square when it is not extended, something slightly different from the usual rectangle. It rises on four gorgeously hand-carved turned and reeded tapering legs that still have their original brass and porcelain cup castors. Made from much sought after flame mahogany wood, the colour and grain of this fantastic antique dining table makes it a breathtaking addition to any dining room or conference room. Flame mahogany is so called because of the warm colour of the wood in contrast to other types of mahogany which can be darker. Mahogany was much valued in the 18th and 19th centuries as the wood of choice for high quality furniture. Thomas Sheraton the world famous furniture designer and maker singled mahogany out as a wood that has “ a beautiful figure” and which polishes up so well that he believed any furniture piece made from it would be “an ornament in any room.” This can certainly be said of this particular example of a superb antique dining table. This antique dining table is in excellent condition and it has been beautifully cleaned, polished and waxed in one of our workshops. You can see for yourself just how fantastic the condition of this table is by taking a few minutes to review the photos in our gallery. All of the marquetry is handmade and inset. Made from wood veneers of various shades, this large dining table has been expertly French polished by hand to emphasis out the wood grains and marquetry to best effect. Condition This large dining table and the set of chairs is brand new and therefore in pristine condition. The Making of a Marquetry Masterpiece Please take a few moments to view the video we have made about how this large dining table was made by our third generation craftsmen in Italy. We are able to build a similar table for you with your own specification marquetry decoration, at extra cost. Will it fit? This is a very large dining table so be careful to measure the space where you would like it to go. When fully extended using all three of the leaves, this large dining table has a height of 80 cm (2 feet, 7 inches) and a depth of 130 cm (4 feet, 3 inches) and a length of 360 cm (11 feet, 10 inches). When closed (the leaves are not being used) the height and depth are the same, but the length is reduced to 180 cm (5 feet, 11 inches). As you can see, even in its reduced format, this is still a large dining table. About Burr Walnut Burr walnut has been used by furniture makers for centuries due to its wonderful swirling figure which adds true glamour to the pieces it is used for. Most walnut wood displays the swirling figure when it is cut and polished, particularly when it is cut from where the trunk of the tree meets the roots. However, ‘true’ burr walnut comes from a rare growth pattern of a walnut tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to grow. This formation is unusual and rare, so burr walnut usually refers to the more ordinary swirling figures found in more normal growth. Antique Art Deco Dining Table Burr Walnut

Antique Art Deco Dining Table Burr Walnut c.1930

This lovely antique Art Deco dining table dates from 1930, crafted in burr walnut, it can comfortably seat six people. Standing on twin pedestal supports this table is crafted from lovely burr walnut. With canted corners the antique dining table has been French polished to bring out the full beauty of the burr walnut grain. Condition As the photographs demonstrate, this Art Deco dining table is in excellent condition having been beautifully restored in our own workshops. More About Burr Walnut True burr walnut comes from taking the wood from a rare growth that occurs on walnut trees where literally hundreds of tiny new branches start growing from the main trunk. However, most walnut display the swirling burr figure when cut and polished particularly in the wood taken from where the tree trunk joins the roots. This antique Art Deco dining table shows the swirling figure off to perfection in the tabletop. The figure is particularly brought out by the French polishing. More About Art Deco Art Deco started in France between 1910 and 1914, and the early incarnation of the style featured very bright colours and largely floral motifs. It was an eclectic style drawing from a range of sources including the orient, and with the growth of industrialisation and technology it embraced and incorporated features and elements denoting all that was modern. It influenced every area of design throughout the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. Buildings, cars, trains, ocean liners, furniture, fashion, jewellery and all the other decorative arts incorporated its design principles, including everyday objects such as fridges and telephones. Influenced by Cubism it used geometric forms and angles as well as very bright colours and exotic materials such as ebony.  In the 1920s it was associated with elegance, luxury, exuberance and faith in technological and social progress, employing the finest craftsmanship. As the era progressed, and in response to the great depression, the style became more muted with curved surfaces and designers started to use newly invented materials such as stainless steel, chrome plating and bakelite, an early form of plastic. Objects started to be mass produced and often featured highly polished surfaces. The 1930s saw the style take on the curves of aerodynamic ‘bullet’ shapes invented to reduce wind resistance and the bullet shape was used not just in moving objects such as cars and trains but also in buildings, furniture and other decorative objects.  The style faded after the second world war. Antique Exhibition Quality English Mahogany Marquetry Centre Table 19th C

Antique Exhibition Quality English Mahogany Marquetry Centre Table 19th C

This is a fine exhibition quality English Victorian antique marquetry centre table attributed to the London master cabinet makers Edwards & Roberts, dating to around 1880. It is quite simply stunning and must be seen to be believed. The circular antique marquetry centre table features the very highest quality satinwood crossbanding with fine marquetry circular panels depicting stunning classical figures representing the arts surrounded by Adam style urns and floral decoration in satinwood. It stands on a circular fluted stem with four floral inlaid splayed legs that terminate in square cup casters. The table top can be tilted through 90 degrees when required by using the brass catch on the underside. The firm Edwards & Roberts was one of the best English antique furniture cabinet makers of the second half of the eighteenth century. Founded in 1845, the company grew to occupy more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, London, where they continued to trade until the end of the 19th century. Edwards & Roberts became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers, producing high quality furniture and working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. The quality of timber used was always the best quality with fine burr walnuts, finely figured mahogany and lighter toned satinwood as they specialised in marquetry, inlay and ormolu, as exemplified by this Victorian English mahogany round table. Please make sure that this elegant Regency dining table will fit into the room you have in mind. It would be a shame to not be able to extend it to its full glory in your room. For your reference the measurements when fully extended are a height of 76 cm (equivalent to 2 feet, 6 inches), a length of 303 cm (9 feet, 11 inches) and a depth of 117 cm (3 feet, 10 inches). When both leaves are removed the height and depth remain the same, but the length is reduced to 192 cm which is equivalent to 6 feet, 4 inches. What is Burr Walnut? When it is cut and polished a swirling figure is present in nearly all walnut, and is particularly pronounced in the wood taken from the base of the tree where is joins the roots. However, true burr is taken from a rare growth on the tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to sprout. This type of burr produces some of the most beautifully complex figuring in wood that you can find. More Information We are always delighted to discuss our stock of Regency dining tables.
