Antique Victorian 12 ft Flame Mahogany Extending Dining Table C1860

Antique Victorian 12 ft Flame Mahogany Extending Dining Table C1860

This is a beautiful flame mahogany Victorian antique dining table dating from the 1860s and able to seat fourteen people in comfort. This Victorian dining table has been hand-crafted in solid flame mahogany, a wood which is renowned for its beautiful warm coloured grain. The table is fully extendable and has three additional leaves which can be added or removed by using a special wind out mechanism which still has the original winding handle. The leaves can be easily added or removed as required and stored away when not needed. This antique dining table is a superb example of Victorian craftsmanship and is raised on four hand carved turned and fluted bulbous tapering legs. Original brass cup castors terminate each leg. This wonderful antique dining table is sure to make a profound impression in any room and will impress your dinner guests. Condition: As is evident from the photographs, this antique dining table is in splendid condition having been fully restored in our workshops. About Flame Mahogany Flame mahogany has long been prized by master cabinet makers for the beauty of its grain and durability of the wood. Thomas Sheraton, the famous 18th century furniture maker once said that mahogany was "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." It became the wood of choice for fine furniture making and particularly for what are now antique dining tables, throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. As a point of interest, the flame figure in the mahogany is revealed by slicing through the point where the face of the branch joins another part of the tree. Winding Mechanisms for extending tables The winding mechanism for this antique Victorian dining table would have been a new invention when the table was first made. Samuel Hawkins first applied for the patent for the screw expander mechanism on June 6th 1861. His business was taken over by a young machinist named Joseph Fitter in 1864 who went on to provide winding mechanisms for extending tables as well as screw expanders for other applications such as piano stools from his workshop in Birmingham, England. Antique 12ft Victorian Flame Mahogany D End Extending Dining Table 19th C

Antique 12ft Victorian Flame Mahogany D End Extending Dining Table 19th C

This gorgeous extendable Victorian mahogany dining table dates from around 1870 and can comfortably seat up to fourteen people when fully extended. The Victorian mahogany dining table has D-ends and could equally well be used as a conference table. It has the four original extension leaves which measure approximately 50 cm (1 foot 8 inches) each and which can be added or removed to extend the table as required. This makes it an extremely flexible addition to any furniture collection. It stands on four wonderfully elegant carved and turned legs that each end in stylish brass and porcelain castors which means it can easily be positioned in any part of a room or moved between rooms with relative ease making this Victorian mahogany dining table a very useful and flexible furniture item. At full length it measures approximately 356cm (12 feet) which means it would also make a superb conference table as well. The carving on the legs is wonderfully executed with a crossed leaf motif. Flame mahogany is a superb wood for making furniture as Thomas Sheraton, the renowned 18th Century furniture designer and maker testified to when he said of mahogany “it has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed.” The flame figure of the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of a branch at the point where it meets another element of the tree. The colour of the wood is such that it radiates warmth leading to the idea of ‘flame’ mahogany. This can be particularly seen in this gorgeous Victorian mahogany dining table. It has four leaves which can be added or removed to vary the length of the table. This makes it an extremely flexible piece of furniture which can be adapted to suit many different types of occasion. This gorgeous antique dining table is also wide enough to comfortably accommodate two people sitting at each end when it is fully extended or making a square when it is not extended, something slightly different from the usual rectangle. It rises on four gorgeously hand-carved turned and reeded tapering legs that still have their original brass and porcelain cup castors. Made from much sought after flame mahogany wood, the colour and grain of this fantastic antique dining table makes it a breathtaking addition to any dining room or conference room. Flame mahogany is so called because of the warm colour of the wood in contrast to other types of mahogany which can be darker. Mahogany was much valued in the 18th and 19th centuries as the wood of choice for high quality furniture. Thomas Sheraton the world famous furniture designer and maker singled mahogany out as a wood that has “ a beautiful figure” and which polishes up so well that he believed any furniture piece made from it would be “an ornament in any room.” This can certainly be said of this particular example of a superb antique dining table. This antique dining table is in excellent condition and it has been beautifully cleaned, polished and waxed in one of our workshops. You can see for yourself just how fantastic the condition of this table is by taking a few minutes to review the photos in our gallery. You will also see what a lovely addition to any furniture collection this antique dining table will make. More antique period and contemporary dining tables can be found here. Antique Art Deco Dining Table Burr Walnut

Antique Art Deco Dining Table Burr Walnut c.1930

This lovely antique Art Deco dining table dates from 1930, crafted in burr walnut, it can comfortably seat six people. Standing on twin pedestal supports this table is crafted from lovely burr walnut. With canted corners the antique dining table has been French polished to bring out the full beauty of the burr walnut grain. Condition As the photographs demonstrate, this Art Deco dining table is in excellent condition having been beautifully restored in our own workshops. More About Burr Walnut True burr walnut comes from taking the wood from a rare growth that occurs on walnut trees where literally hundreds of tiny new branches start growing from the main trunk. However, most walnut display the swirling burr figure when cut and polished particularly in the wood taken from where the tree trunk joins the roots. This antique Art Deco dining table shows the swirling figure off to perfection in the tabletop. The figure is particularly brought out by the French polishing. More About Art Deco Art Deco started in France between 1910 and 1914, and the early incarnation of the style featured very bright colours and largely floral motifs. It was an eclectic style drawing from a range of sources including the orient, and with the growth of industrialisation and technology it embraced and incorporated features and elements denoting all that was modern. It influenced every area of design throughout the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. Buildings, cars, trains, ocean liners, furniture, fashion, jewellery and all the other decorative arts incorporated its design principles, including everyday objects such as fridges and telephones. Influenced by Cubism it used geometric forms and angles as well as very bright colours and exotic materials such as ebony.  In the 1920s it was associated with elegance, luxury, exuberance and faith in technological and social progress, employing the finest craftsmanship. As the era progressed, and in response to the great depression, the style became more muted with curved surfaces and designers started to use newly invented materials such as stainless steel, chrome plating and bakelite, an early form of plastic. Objects started to be mass produced and often featured highly polished surfaces. The 1930s saw the style take on the curves of aerodynamic ‘bullet’ shapes invented to reduce wind resistance and the bullet shape was used not just in moving objects such as cars and trains but also in buildings, furniture and other decorative objects.  The style faded after the second world war. When it is cut and polished a swirling figure is present in nearly all walnut, and is particularly pronounced in the wood taken from the base of the tree where is joins the roots. About Flame Mahogany It was during the 18th century that mahogany started to be commercially imported from the Americas and soon became a firm favourite of fine furniture makers due to gorgeous colour and also its strength. In the 18th century, Thomas Sheraton, the renown English furniture designer wrote that mahogany was his wood of choice when strength was needed. He went on to say that having a beautiful figure it could be polished to a high gloss and that any room was bound to ornamented by a piece of mahogany furniture. The specific flam figure that makes flame mahogany is created by cutting through the branch as a point where it joins another element of the tree, e.g. the trunk or another branch. Our bespoke marquetry large dining tables are made in our Italian workshop with the greatest care and attention to detail by our third generation master craftspeople. Making a marquetry large dining table involves many phases and a great deal of skill and craftsmanship as you will discover when reading about the process below. First the design of the marquetry is drawn on paper and then glued onto a sheet of plywood. The veneers are then attached to the underside with pins. The maximum number of sheets of veneer that can be worked with is sixteen, and in the case of this large dining table we used eight for the burr walnut and eight for the marquetry. With a fret cutter and using a very fine blade, the marquetry shapes are cut out, using the burr walnut and various coloured veneers to compose the flowers, urns, birds, ribbons and other marquetry decoration. These days we use an electric fret cutter, although in the 18th and 19th centuries the cutters would have been operated by treadles. The newly cut pieces of veneer are then placed on a large tray and singed by being placed in hot sand heated in a red hot crucible. A different shade is achieved for each veneer piece by varying how deep and how long it is left in the hot sand. The various pieces of veneer are then hand-inserted into the burr walnut, piece by piece. They are taped in place and then when the full pattern is complete, the whole piece is turned over and a large piece of glued paper is placed over the whole design. The tape is then removed. The solid mahogany table is then veneered with mahogany, twice on the underside (horizontally and vertically) and once on the top side. After this, the prepared marquetry and burr walnut sheet is placed on top and the whole table top is put into a hot press, which glues the marquetry and burr walnut sheet to the large dining table top. The backing paper is then sanded off and the table top is veneered four times to prevent the top from bowing or warping. Once the assembly is complete, the table is French polished by hand using all-natural products, resulting in a truly wonderful bespoke masterpiece of marquetry. About Burr Walnut Nearly all walnut wood, when cut and polished displays a swirling figure. However, true burr is much rarer as it it made from unusual growth on the tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to grow. Burr walnut produces some of the most beautifully complex wood figures that can be found in any type of wood and is prized in fine furniture making for this complexity. We have made great use of this wonderful wood in this bespoke handmade large dining table. Marquetry The technique of using inlaid wood veneers, silver, brass pewter and mother of pearl to create pictures and patterns was developed in the luxury cabinet making workshops of Flanders including Antwerp during the early 16th Century. The craft drew its inspiration from 16th Century Florence where craftsmen inlaid solid marble slabs with designs formed from fitted jaspers, semi-precious stones and other marbles. Marquetry became all the rage in 17th Century France where the craft was imported to create furniture of unprecedented luxury by manufacturers such as Gobelins. Items of great splendour were created for Louis XIV’s various royal residences including Versailles. Early masters of the craft included the Fleming Pierre Golle who, together with his son-in-law Andre-Charles Boulle founded a dynasty of Parisian cabinet-makers who supplied the royal household and became famous for a type of marquetry that used brass and pewter to create intricate foliage designs. Marquetry continues to be used in a range of fine furniture using modern designs and patterns. The skills required to produce marquetry designs, particularly those of earlier centuries are rare. We are very lucky to have the benefit of third generation skilled marquetry craftspeople in our Italian workshop enabling us to bring you this exquisite marquetry large dining table. Winding Mechanism for extending tables The invention of a screw expander mechanism was patented by Samuel Hawkins in 1861 and his business was taken over by Joseph Fitter in 1864. Based in Birmingham, England, Fitter expanded the use of the screw mechanism for extending tables as well as for piano stools and other applications. French Polish French polishing is a process of bringing wood surfaces to an exceptionally high gloss through the application of an alcohol and shellac polish. It requires a lot of patience and hard work, but the resulting finish is regarded as one of the finest available. French polished surfaces are soft and so stain easily (e.g. with a hot coffee cup) but being soft can also be repaired more easily. Stains can be removed and blended back into the French polished surface relatively easily in comparison to other, more modern, wood finishes e.g. varnish. Antique Regency George III Pembroke Table Gillows

Antique Regency George III Pembroke Table Gillows c.1820

This Pembroke antique dining table is unmistakable in sophistication and style dating from the Regency period and attributed to Gillows, the famous furniture makers mentioned by the likes of Jane Austen and Thackeray in their works. This antique dining table has been hand-crafted from solid mahogany which was the wood of choice for fine furniture makers due to its durability and also its beautiful grain which provides a lovely colour and patina. Above an end frieze drawer, the table has twin rounded flaps creating a rectangular top. The table top is crossbanded around the edge which provides stylish and subtle decoration. This antique dining table is raised on four fluted uprights on a quadripartite base which features ornate brass caps and castors. It was originally purchased from Messrs Christies Auctioneers in the Mere Hall auction on 23rd May 1994 as lot 56. Condition: As seen from the photos, this antique Regency dining table is in excellent condition. Origin of ‘Pembroke’ Tables The name ‘Pembroke Table’ is highly debated, but it’s believed to be named after Mary Herbert, the Countess of Pembroke (1561-1621) who was the first person to order a folding flap table design. They were first introduced as a type of table in the 18th century and remained popular throughout the 19th century due to their flexibility. They are characterised by having an oval or rectangular top with folding or drop leaves on each side. Most examples have four legs which are sometimes connected by stretchers and also have one or more drawers in the frieze. This design means they can be easily stored and moved about and opened for dining, serving tea or writing. Gillows Gillows & Co, based in Lancaster with a later shop in London, were furniture makers whose name became a byword for quality. The firm was started in about 1730 by Robert Gillow who was joined in business by his son Richard Gillow in 1754. They are noted for their use of mahogany wood, which they were able to import directly from the Americas through owning a twelfth share in the trading ship Bridget. The success of the firm was partly based on this fact. They set up a London branch in 1760 and a London shop in 1770 and went on to win commissions to furnish and decorate public buildings across the world as well as for British aristocratic houses such as Tatton Hall. Pieces from Gillows can now be seen in museums in London, Leeds, Adelaide, Melbourne and Auckland as well as in their own Gillows Museum in Lancaster. As such it is in perfect and pristine condition. The Making of this Marquetry Masterpiece Please take a few moments to watch our video which explains how this wonderful large dining table was made. You can also read about this below where we explain the process. We are very lucky to have third-generation master craftspeople working in our Italian workshop where this wonderful large dining table was made. It has been made with the greatest care and attention to detail. As you can imagine, making such fine large dining tables is a complex process involving lots of phases requiring a great deal of skill and craftsmanship. The first step is to work out the design for the marquetry and draw this onto paper. This is then glued onto a sheet of plywood with the veneers being pinned on the underside. We can only work with sixteen sheets of veneers and for this large dining table we used eight veneer sheets for the burr walnut and eight for the marquetry. Using a fret cutter with a very fine blade, we cut out the marquetry shapes making sure we use appropriately coloured veneers to compose the foliage and flowers. The fret cutter is now powered by electricity, but in the old days the cutting blades would have been powered by treadles. We then place the veneer pieces on a large tray and taking each piece individually, we singe it in hot sand heated in a red hot crucible. This enables us to achieve a different shade for each piece of veneer depending on how deep and how long we leave it in the sand. The veneer pieces are then hand-inserted piece-by-piece into the burr walnut. These are then taped in place and when the design is finished it is turned over and a piece of glued paper is attached to the back to hold the whole piece together. The tape on the front is then removed. In the meantime, the solid mahogany table is veneered with mahogany, once on the top side, and twice on the underside (horizontally and vertically). The burr walnut and marquetry veneer sheet is put on the mahogany table top and the whole piece of the large dining table top is put into a hot press which fixes the marquetry and burr walnut veneer to the tabletop surface. This surface is then veneered four time to prevent it from warping or bowing. Once everything is assembled, the large dining table is expertly French polished by hand resulting in a truly spectacular bespoke large dining table featuring a masterpiece of marquetry. About Burr Walnut Virtually all walnut wood displays a unique swirling figure when cut and polished, particularly when the wood is taken from where the tree meets the roots. True burr however can only be taken from a rare growth pattern in a walnut tree where tiny branches, sometimes numbering hundreds, have started to grow. Burr walnut is particularly prized by fine furniture makers because it produces some of the most wonderfully delicate and complex wood figuring to be found in any sort of wood. Because of this, we have chosen to use burr walnut in our large dining table. Marquetry The technique of using inlays to create designs has been used both in marble and wood since the early 16th century. The centre for marble working became Florence where extremely ornate stone work was undertaken using inlays of semi precious stones, jaspers and different coloured marbles. Using inlaid wood veneers of different hues was pioneered in Flanders and in particular Antwerp where fine cabinet-makers developed the techniques needed to produce marquetry. The craft then passed into France and was used extensively by the luxury furniture makers of the time particularly for items for Louis XIV’s royal palaces including Versailles. Manufacturers such as Gobelins took the art to a new height creating items of unprecedented luxury and splendour for the royal court. Early marquetry masters included Pierre Golle, a master craftsman from Flanders and his son-in-law Andre-Charles Boulle. They founded a dynasty of Parisian cabinet-makers became famous for marquetry that used brass and pewter in intricate foliage designs and who supplied the royal household. Marquetry continues to flourish using modern designs and techniques. However, the skills required to produce marquetry designs from earlier centuries are rare.We consider ourselves very lucky to have third generation skilled marquetry craftsmen and women in our Italian workshop enabling us to create this exquisite marquetry large dining table for you. Winding Mechanism for extending tables Samuel Hawkins patented a screw expander mechanism in 1861. His business was bought by Joseph Fitter in 1864, who used the screw expander as the basis for winding mechanisms for extending tables. He also used it for other things such as piano stools. French Polish French polish is a process rather than just a type of polish made from alcohol and shellac. The painstaking process of polishing and repolishing results in an exceptionally high gloss on the wood surface. The technique became prominent in the 18th century and has been used for the finest luxury furniture items ever since. French polished surfaces are soft and stain easily (e.g. with a spill of water or a hot coffee cup) but are also more easily patch repaired than other surfaces such as lacquers or veneers, because due to the softeness, the area can be blended into the surrounding finish. Condition This large dining table is newly made and is therefore in pristine condition. The Making of this Marquetry Masterpiece We have made a video to show you how this spectacular large dining table was made. Please take a few moments to watch it. You can also read about the process of making this large dining table below. In our Italian workshop we are very lucky to have third-generation master craftspeople where this lovely large dining table was handcrafted to a bespoke design. As you can see from the photos and video it has been made with the greatest attention to detail, right down to individually hand colouring each small piece of marquetry veneer. As you can imagine, making such a fine large dining table is a process that requires a lot of phases and dedication from our master craftspeople. The whole process for making this large dining table starts with developing the marquetry design that is in perfect keeping with the Victorian era. This design is then pasted onto a sheet of plywood and the veneers are then pinned to the underside. Only sixteen sheets of veneer can be worked with and for this large dining table we used eight sheets for the marquetry and eight for the burr walnut. We use a fret cutter with a very fine blade and cut out the marquetry shapes, ensuring that we use appropriately coloured woods for the veneers to make the urns, ribbons, flowers and foliage In the 18th and 19th century this type of work would have been done with cutters that were powered by treadles, these days we have the advantage of electric cutters, although it still takes a great deal of skill to get this intricate piece of work right. Each piece of veneer is put on a large tray and these are then individually selected and singed in hot sand which is heated in a red hot crucible. Each piece is carefully placed and the shade of the wood changes according to how deep and how long it is left in the sand. This is highly skilled artistic work ensuring that each element of the marquetry design is toasted to just the right colour. Like a very elaborate jigsaw puzzle, each piece is then hand inserted into the burr walnut and taped in place. When the whole design is finished it is turned over and a piece of glued paper is placed on the back to hold it all in place. The tape on the front can now be removed. The solid mahogany table is prepared by being veneered with the top being veneered once on the top side and twice on the underside - both vertically and horizontally. The marquetry and burr walnut sheet is then attached to the table top using a hot press which fixes it in place. The whole top is then veneered an additional four times to prevent bowing or warping. Once everything is ready, the whole table is French polished by hand ensuring that all the glorious colours of the various wood grains are brought out to perfection. This results in a truly spectacular large dining table. About Burr Walnut Burr walnut is a wonderfully figured wood, particularly when the wood it cut and polished from the area of the tree where the trunk connects with the roots. True burr walnut comes from a tree where a rare growth of hundreds of tiny branches has started. Burr walnut is highly prized by fine furniture makers because of the highly decorative nature of the wood figure which adds elegance and style to their pieces. This is the reason we have decided to use burr walnut veneers for our bespoke large dining tables. Marquetry Marquetry is the technique of creating designs and patterns by inlaying different materials into a piece of stone or wood. It was developed in the early 16th century in Florence, where stone masons inlaid different types of marble, precious stones and jaspars to create intricate patterns in their stonework, particularly in churches. A similar expertise arose in Flanders for wood marquetry, and this region produced master craftsmen in the art. The seventeenth century saw the rise of the craft in France, when the era of conspicuous consumption of the French monarchy gave marquetry a boost as highly ornate designs created extremely luxurious looking furniture which was also prized for the skill needed to produce it. Louis XIV commissioned a large amount of marquetry furniture and fittings for his royal palaces and residences and the French aristocracy followed suit. Early marquetry masters included the Flemish craftsman Pierre Golle. He and his son-in-law, Andre-Charles Boulle founded a dynasty of cabinet makers in Paris who became famous for their marquetry using brass and pewter in intricate foliage designs. They were also suppliers to the royal household and helped to popularise the art. Marquetry continues to flourish today and uses modern techniques and designs. However, we consider ourselves very lucky to have third generation skilled marquetry craftsmen and women in our Italian workshop capable of producing marquetry that matches any of that produced in bygone eras. This enables us to create this exquisite marquetry large dining table for you. Winding Mechanism for extending tables Joseph Fitter became the pioneer developer of the screw mechanism that enables a table winding mechanism to work having bought the patent and business from Samuel Hawkins in 1864. Fitter adapted the screw expander for tables and also used it for such things as piano stools. French Polish French polish is made from alcohol and shellac, but it is more of a process than just the application of a type of polish. French polishing requires a lot of repetitive work of buffing and polishing that results in a very high gloss on the wood surface. It also is probably the best way to bring out the fine detail of wood figuring and as such has been used for luxury furniture items since the 18th century when it became prominent. Surfaces that are French polished are soft and can stain easily, but can be more easily repaired than varnished or lacquer surfaces as patch fixes can be blended easily into the surrounding finish. The Making of this Marquetry Masterpiece Please take a few moments to view the video we have made about how this large dining table was made. You can also learn about the process used to make this large dining table below. We consider ourselves very lucky to have third-generation master craftsmen and women in our workshops based in Italy who are highly skilled in crafting handmade tables with inlaid marquetry. The photos and video demonstrates the amount of skill that has gone into making this large dining table. Making such a fine large dining table requires a number of phases each of which requires a meticulous attention to detail to ensure the end product is truly exquisite. The starting point is designing the marquetry patterns and choosing the particular veneers needed to complement the overall design. In the case of this large dining table, we chose marquetry designs and veneers that were in keeping with the styling of the Victorian era. The design is drawn on paper which is then pasted onto plywood and the specially chosen veneers are pinned on the underside of the plywood. The marquetry shapes are then cut out using a fret saw with a very fine blade, a process that requires a keen eye and steady hand. Each piece of veneer is then laid out on a large tray and then singed in hot sand heated in a red hot cruicible. The shade of each piece of veneer is determined by the depth and length of time it is left in the hot sand. This is painstaking work as each small veneer element is selected individually and toasted in the sand to just the right colour for the design. Each marquetry piece is then hand-fitted into the burr walnut background and taped in place. Once the whole design is completed, it is turned over and a piece of glued paper is placed on the back holding all the individual items in place. At this stage the tape can then be removed. The solid mahogany large dining table with its leaves is prepared by having its table top veneered both on top and underneath. The marquetry and burr walnut sheet is then carefully placed on the tabletop and hot pressed to fix it in place. The whole table top is veneered an additional four times to ensure there is no warping or bowing of the find marquetry and burr walnut surface. Once completed, the whole table is French polished by hand to ensure that all the fabulous colours of the marquetry and wood grains is highlighted to perfection resulting in an extraordinary large dining table. Will it fit? This is a very large dining table so be careful to measure the space where you would like it to go, including the door to the room where you would like it placed. Fully extended using the leaves, this large dining table has a height of 80 cm (2 feet, 7 inches) and a depth of 130 cm (4 feet, 3 inches) and a length of 360 cm (11 feet, 10 inches). When it is closed (the leaves are not being used) the height and depth are the same, but the length is reduced to 180 cm (5 feet, 11 inches). As you can see, even in its reduced state, this is a substantial large dining table. About Burr Walnut Burr walnut has been used by furniture makers for centuries due to its wonderful swirling figure which adds true glamour to the pieces it is used for. Most walnut wood displays the swirling figure when it is cut and polished, particularly when it is cut from where the trunk of the tree meets the roots. However, ‘true’ burr walnut comes from a rare growth pattern of a walnut tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to grow. This formation is unusual and rare, so burr walnut usually refers to the more ordinary swirling figures found in more normal growth. Marquetry Marquetry is a craft that developed in the early 16th century where different materials were inlaid into stone or wood to create patterns and pictures. Inlaying different types of stones into marble started in Florence with the technique being copied for wood in Flanders and particularly Antwerp. The craft passed into France during the opulent reign of Louis XIV and his successors in the 17th century, where the beauty and elegance of furniture with marquetry was used to furnish royal palaces and other aristocratic residences. Marquetry continues to flourish today using modern techniques and designs. However, we pride ourselves in producing large dining tables with marquetry that uses the hand making techniques of the master craftsmen of earlier centuries. This has enabled us to create this exquisite marquetry large dining table in a way that is authentically in keeping with its Victorian styling. French Polish French polishing is much a technique as a particular type of polish. The actual French polish is made from alcohol and shellac, but also requires a process of buffing and polishing that is arduous and takes a long time, with various steps needed to produce the very high gloss finish that is unsurpassed by any other method of finishing fine furniture. The table securely stands on six legs, each of which is elegantly carved featuring additional marquetry and terminating in a brass castor. Matching chairs shown as seen in the photos can also be purchased as a separate item. Condition This is a bespoke piece that has been newly made, so is in pristine condition. The Making of this Marquetry Masterpiece We have produced a short video to explain how this wonderful large dining table was made. You can also find out about the process used to make this large dining table in the paragraphs below. Our main workshop is in Italy and is the home to third-generation master craftsmen and women who are highly skilled in constructing handmade large dining tables and crafting hand cut marquetry for them. This requires a high level of consistency in the execution of such an intricate designs across the large surface area. You will see the wonderful consistency from looking at the photographs. Assembling such a beautiful large dining table requires a number of phases all of which require a high amount of skill and attention to detail. The first step is to create and draw the marquetry designs on paper in keeping with the styling and design ethic of the Victorian period. These designs are then glued onto a sheet of plywood and the veneers that are to be used for the burr walnut and the marquetry pieces are pinned underneath the plywood. The detailed marquetry shapes are then cut out using a fret saw with a very fine blade, a process that requires a keen eye and the steadiness of a surgeon’s hand. The assembly begins and each piece of veneer is singly selected and singed in hot sand which is continuously heated in a red hot crucible. The point of this is to colour the veneers and the shades vary according to the depth and length of time the piece is left in the hot sand. Again, ensuring that there is a consistency of colour and tone across the whole marquetry design requires a high level of skill. Each piece is hand-fitted with the burr walnut to produce the overall design taped into place. Once the whole piece is completed glued paper is stuck to the back to hold the whole assembly in place. Once this is done the tape on the front can be removed and the piece of marquetry veneer begins to take shape. The solid mahogany large dining table is also built and the tabletop and its underneath is prepared with mahogany veneer. The burr walnut and marquetry sheet is then carefully aligned to the tabletop and placed in a hot press which fixes it in place. The tabletop is then veneered a further four times to prevent buckling and warping of the tabletop marquetry. Once completed, the whole table is expertly French polished by hand to provide the highest quality finish, bringing out all the tones and shades of the marquetry and wood grains. This results in an exquisite finished large dining table. About Burr Walnut The wonderful swirling figure found in burr walnut has made it a wood of choice for fine furniture and cabinet-makers across the centuries. The swirling figure is created by cutting and polishing the wood from areas of the tree where is meets other elements e.g. where the trunk meets the roots. Marquetry Marquetry is the art of inlaying materials into either wood or stone to create patterns and pictures. The art developed in the early 16th century in Florence, where stonemasons started inlaying precious stones, jaspers and multi-coloured marble into marble slabs which were used in fine buildings, particularly churches and cathedrals. The technique was copied for wood, with materials such as pewter, brass and other woods being used. Antwerp and the whole Flanders region became renown for this type of wood marquetry during the 16th century. Marquetry became the watchword of luxury during the 17th century in France when Flemish master cabinet-makers migrated to Paris and the demand for the sumptuous and luxurious rose to prominence under the rule of Louis XIV. Many fine pieces of marquetry furniture were commissioned for Versailles and other royal residences and marquetry items became extremely popular denoting wealth and status. French Polish French polishing is a technique that uses alcohol and shellac polish to produce incredibly high gloss on wood surfaces. It is an arduous process requiring a lot of work, but the results are universally acknowledged as superb for enhancing wood grains. As such the technique is particularly suited for bringing out the detail, colour and refinement of marquetry. Condition This large oval dining table is in pristine condition being brand new. The Making of this Marquetry Masterpiece Marquetry is a highly skilled art and we have made a video to show you just how this lovely large oval dining table was made in our Italian workshops by third generation master craftsmen and women. Please take a few moments to watch this video in order to fully appreciate what a fine piece of furniture this is. Making this large oval dining table started with designing and drawing the marquetry patterns onto paper. The paper was glued onto a sheet of plywood with the carefully chosen veneers pinned to the underside. The marquetry shapes of urns, ribbons, flowers and foliage were then cut out using a very fine blade fret cutter, a process that requires a keen eye and the steady hand of a surgeon! Each small piece of marquetry veneer was then placed on a large tray and then each individual item was selected and singed by hand in hot sand heated in a red hot crucible. The colour and tone of the piece of veneer changes depending on the depth and time the piece is left in the sand. The marquetry pattern was then painstakingly pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle, with each piece being hand inserted into the cut burr walnut and taped in place. When the whole design was finished it was turned over and a piece of glued paper was placed on the back to hold it all in place. The tape on the front was then removed. The solid mahogany table was also prepared by veneering the tabletop both underneath and on top. The marquetry and burr walnut sheet was then attached to the table top using a hot press which fixed the prepared sheet of burr walnut and marquetry in place. The whole top was then veneered an additional four times to prevent bowing or warping. Once everything was complete, the whole table was French polished by hand ensuring that all the glorious colours of the various wood grains were highlighted to perfection. As you can see from the photographs, the result speaks for itself - a magnificent large oval dining table. About Burr Walnut Burr walnut is a very refined wood with a wonderful swirling figure that comes from cutting from a part of the tree where it meets other elements e.g. where the trunk meets the roots. It has been highly prized throughout the centuries by master cabinet-makers because of the colour and decorative nature of this figure. True burr walnut comes from a rare growth that sometimes happens on walnut trees where literally hundreds of tiny branches start growing, but the swirling figure can be found in most walnut trees if cut in the correct way. It is due to this luxurious grain that we chose to use this wood as a veneer for our lovely large oval dining table. Marquetry Marquetry has been practiced since the early 16th century in both Florence and Antwerp with the former specialising in doing inlaid stone work, whilst the latter became famous for producing wood marquetry. It’s popularity exploded in France during the 17th century when it was considered luxurious enough to be used for furniture destined for Versailles and other royal residences with Louis XIV commissioning very many fine pieces which can still be seen today in museums and palaces. Marquetry continues to flourish even today with modern techniques and designs being employed. However, we consider ourselves very lucky to have third generation skilled marquetry craftspeople in our workshops in Italy capable of producing marquetry that matches any of that that was produced in previous centuries. This has enabled us to bring this exquisite marquetry large oval dining table to you. French Polish French polishing is renowned for bringing out the full grain and colour of fine woods and veneers. Because of this we have chosen to use it on this delightful large oval dining table and it certainly does justice to the fine marquetry work. French polish is made from shellac and alcohol and requires a lot of hard work to buff and polish repeatedly until the surface is brought to the highest gloss possible. This type of polishing has been used for luxury items since the 18th century when it became the preferred method of finishing the work of master cabinet-makers.
