Condition: As is evident from the photographs, this antique dining table is in splendid condition having been fully restored in our workshops. About Flame Mahogany Flame mahogany has long been prized by master cabinet makers for the beauty of its grain and durability of the wood. Thomas Sheraton, the famous 18th century furniture maker once said that mahogany was "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." It became the wood of choice for fine furniture making and particularly for what are now antique dining tables, throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. As a point of interest, the flame figure in the mahogany is revealed by slicing through the point where the face of the branch joins another part of the tree. Winding Mechanisms for extending tables The winding mechanism for this antique Victorian dining table would have been a new invention when the table was first made. Samuel Hawkins first applied for the patent for the screw expander mechanism on June 6th 1861. His business was taken over by a young machinist named Joseph Fitter in 1864 who went on to provide winding mechanisms for extending tables as well as screw expanders for other applications such as piano stools from his workshop in Birmingham, England. Vintage 7ft 4& 34 Diamete Tillman Jupe Dining Table 20thC & 10 dining Chairs

Vintage 7ft 4" Diamete Tillman Jupe Dining Table 20thC & 10 dining Chairs

This fabulous dining set comprises a Regency Revival Jupe style flame mahogany dining table by William Tillman, C1970 in date and a set of ten antique contemporary balloon back dining chairs. The table has a solid mahogany top that has five additional perimeter leaves that can be added around the circumference. It is very stable as it has four downswept splay legs united by conforming undertier, terminating with brass paw feet and castors.   When required you can add the leaves around the perimeter by pulling slides out from the sides of the table and sliding the leaves on them. With the leaves attached around the circumference it can seat up to ten people in comfort, with the leaves removed  the diameter is 167cms ( 5ft 6 Inches approx ) and can then seat six to eight people.   This fascinating table illustrates all the very best elements of English cabinet-making combined with the remarkable burst of inventiveness of the Industrial Revolution. It was not until John Johnstone and Robert Jupe patented their ingenious design in March 1835 for an expanding round table, that round dining tables, which had suffered from the problem of not offering flexibility of seating, could compete with the established rectangular extending dining tables.   The set of ten balloon back dining chairs have been masterfully crafted in beautiful solid mahogany throughout and the finish and attention to detail on display are truly breathtaking. The set comprises ten side chairs,  all of which feature an attractive balloon back design and seats that have been upholstered in the finest golden damask  fabric. There is no mistaking the fine craftsmanship of this handsome table, which is certain to become a treasured addition to your furniture collection, and a talking point with guests at meal times.     Condition:   In excellent condition the table having been beautifully cleaned and polished in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation.

Vintage 12 ft Regency Revival 3 Pillar Dining Table William Tillman 20th C

Vintage 12 ft Regency Revival 3 Pillar Dining Table William Tillman 20th C

This fabulous and extremely high quality flame mahogany dining table features triple pillard and can be extended with two leaves to comfortably seat fourteen people. This fantastic flame mahogany table was bought at great expense from Harrods in Knightsbridge in London in 1982. It was made by master cabinet maker William Tillman who was making superb reproduction furniture from the 1970s until his retirement at the end of the 1990’s. His furniture enjoys an amazing worldwide reputation for being of the highest quality and is collected throughout the world. Items such as this flame mahogany dining table were sold in all the famous London stores including Harrods, Peter Jones and Maples. There is no doubt that his furniture will be considered amongst the finest antique furniture in the future. Raised on three gunbarrel bases, each has four sabre legs that terminate in brass castors. This flame mahogany dining table has two leaves which can be added or removed so the table is endlessly adaptable to suit any occasion. The polish used is resistant to heat and water yet the finished surface has a wax patination that is similar to that found on early furniture. Thomas Sheraton, the world famous 18th century furniture designer thought that mahogany was perhaps the best wood for furniture making and designed much of his furniture using this strong and versatile wood believing that it polished up so well that “it is an ornament in any room in which is it placed.” This flame mahogany dining table is a superb example of his words.
