Vintage 12 ft Regency Revival 3 Pillar Dining Table William Tillman 20th C

Vintage 12 ft Regency Revival 3 Pillar Dining Table William Tillman 20th C

This fabulous and extremely high quality flame mahogany dining table features triple pillard and can be extended with two leaves to comfortably seat fourteen people. This fantastic flame mahogany table was bought at great expense from Harrods in Knightsbridge in London in 1982. It was made by master cabinet maker William Tillman who was making superb reproduction furniture from the 1970s until his retirement at the end of the 1990’s. His furniture enjoys an amazing worldwide reputation for being of the highest quality and is collected throughout the world. Items such as this flame mahogany dining table were sold in all the famous London stores including Harrods, Peter Jones and Maples. There is no doubt that his furniture will be considered amongst the finest antique furniture in the future. Raised on three gunbarrel bases, each has four sabre legs that terminate in brass castors. This flame mahogany dining table has two leaves which can be added or removed so the table is endlessly adaptable to suit any occasion. The polish used is resistant to heat and water yet the finished surface has a wax patination that is similar to that found on early furniture. Thomas Sheraton, the world famous 18th century furniture designer thought that mahogany was perhaps the best wood for furniture making and designed much of his furniture using this strong and versatile wood believing that it polished up so well that “it is an ornament in any room in which is it placed.” This flame mahogany dining table is a superb example of his words. This wonderful dining table is in excellent condition having been beautifully cleaned and waxed in our workshops. You can see this by referring to the photo gallery we have provided. For your reference the measurements when fully extended are a height of 76 cm (equivalent to 2 feet, 6 inches), a length of 303 cm (9 feet, 11 inches) and a depth of 117 cm (3 feet, 10 inches). When both leaves are removed the height and depth remain the same, but the length is reduced to 192 cm which is equivalent to 6 feet, 4 inches. What is Burr Walnut? When it is cut and polished a swirling figure is present in nearly all walnut, and is particularly pronounced in the wood taken from the base of the tree where is joins the roots. However, true burr is taken from a rare growth on the tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to sprout. This type of burr produces some of the most beautifully complex figuring in wood that you can find. More Information We are always delighted to discuss our stock of Regency dining tables. About Flame Mahogany It was during the 18th century that mahogany started to be commercially imported from the Americas and soon became a firm favourite of fine furniture makers due to gorgeous colour and also its strength. In the 18th century, Thomas Sheraton, the renown English furniture designer wrote that mahogany was his wood of choice when strength was needed. He went on to say that having a beautiful figure it could be polished to a high gloss and that any room was bound to ornamented by a piece of mahogany furniture. The specific flam figure that makes flame mahogany is created by cutting through the branch as a point where it joins another element of the tree, e.g. the trunk or another branch. Antique Regency George III Pembroke Table Gillows

Antique Regency George III Pembroke Table Gillows c.1820

This Pembroke antique dining table is unmistakable in sophistication and style dating from the Regency period and attributed to Gillows, the famous furniture makers mentioned by the likes of Jane Austen and Thackeray in their works. This antique dining table has been hand-crafted from solid mahogany which was the wood of choice for fine furniture makers due to its durability and also its beautiful grain which provides a lovely colour and patina. Above an end frieze drawer, the table has twin rounded flaps creating a rectangular top. The table top is crossbanded around the edge which provides stylish and subtle decoration. This antique dining table is raised on four fluted uprights on a quadripartite base which features ornate brass caps and castors. It was originally purchased from Messrs Christies Auctioneers in the Mere Hall auction on 23rd May 1994 as lot 56. Condition: As seen from the photos, this antique Regency dining table is in excellent condition. Origin of ‘Pembroke’ Tables The name ‘Pembroke Table’ is highly debated, but it’s believed to be named after Mary Herbert, the Countess of Pembroke (1561-1621) who was the first person to order a folding flap table design. They were first introduced as a type of table in the 18th century and remained popular throughout the 19th century due to their flexibility. They are characterised by having an oval or rectangular top with folding or drop leaves on each side. Most examples have four legs which are sometimes connected by stretchers and also have one or more drawers in the frieze. This design means they can be easily stored and moved about and opened for dining, serving tea or writing. Gillows Gillows & Co, based in Lancaster with a later shop in London, were furniture makers whose name became a byword for quality. The firm was started in about 1730 by Robert Gillow who was joined in business by his son Richard Gillow in 1754. They are noted for their use of mahogany wood, which they were able to import directly from the Americas through owning a twelfth share in the trading ship Bridget. The success of the firm was partly based on this fact. They set up a London branch in 1760 and a London shop in 1770 and went on to win commissions to furnish and decorate public buildings across the world as well as for British aristocratic houses such as Tatton Hall. Pieces from Gillows can now be seen in museums in London, Leeds, Adelaide, Melbourne and Auckland as well as in their own Gillows Museum in Lancaster. Bespoke 10 ft Burr Walnut Regency Style Twin Pillar Dining Table & 10 Chairs

Here we have a fine looking 303cm (10 ft) Handmade Regency Style Twin Pillar Dining Table in burr walnut together with the matching set of 10 dining chairs. This dining table & chairs set is a bespoke contemporary Regency style dining set. It comprises a substantial and very attractive burr walnut twin pillar dining table capable of comfortably seating up to 10 people. From an intimate dinner for a few friends up to a comfortable and prestigious meeting table for up to a dozen people in your office, boardroom or conference room. This versatility is achieved by way of a couple of expansion panels - finished in exactly the same way and to the same standard as the tabletop itself - which can be added or removed as the occasion requires. When both of the panels are installed the table reaches its full splendour measuring some 303cm in length, (a shade below 10ft at 9ft 11 inches). The depth of the table is 117cm (3ft 10 inches) and it is 76cm (2ft 6 inches) high. A table as substantial as this needs equally substantial support and this is provided by the twin sturdy Regency triple leg splay bases. These terminate with elegant brass lion’s paw style castors which look great and make it easy to move the table around if necessary. Matching dining chairs The chairs are made using solid walnut highlighted with elegant burr walnut and intricate marquetry decoration. These Regency dining chairs have convenient drop-in seats which can be removed as required to reveal the very attractive weaved cane seats beneath. This gives you an alternative, somewhat cooler, seating configuration for the summer months or in warmer climates. This set of dining chairs comprises ten side chairs plus a couple of armchairs for the head(s) of table. The dining chairs measure some 93cm, (3ft 1 inch), high by 48cm, (1ft 7 inch) wide and 46cm, (1ft 6 inches), deep. The two armchairs are 95cm high x 56cm wide and 53cm deep - 3 ft 1 inch x 1 ft 10 inches x 1 ft 9 inches if you prefer. These chairs are made from solid mahogany by a craftsman who clearly understands a fine piece of wood. There are ten side chairs, each measuring 89 cm in height (2 ft 11 in) x 50 cm wide (1 ft 8 in) x 48 cm deep (1 ft 7 in).
