This is a truly magnificent antique Russian bronze sculpture after Vasily Grachev ( 1831-1905 ) titled "The Milepost" and dating from the early 20th Century.

The bronze depicting a troika led by a team of three horses with driver and two passengers, passing a milepost on a rutted road, with a gorgeous dark brown patina and mounted on a slate and marble rounded base.

The bronze is signed in Cyrillic on one side with the artist's signature and the other side has the foundry mark

This high-quality hot cast solid bronze was produced using the traditional "lost wax" process, otherwise known as the "cire perdue" method.

This is a splendid antique bronze sculpture of the Russian school, which is sure to receive the maximum amount of attention wherever it is placed.

Vassily Yakovlevich Grachev
was a Russian 19th Century sculptor, 1831-1905. His sculptures perfectly capture the realistic sense of movement and action for which the sculptor was famous. Hisworks have been offered at auction houses such as Christie's and Sotherby's multiple times. The record price for a "Troika" themed sculpture is $57,940 at Christie's in 2010.

Lost Wax Method
sometimes called by the French name of cire perdue or the Latin, cera perduta is the process by which a bronze or brass is cast from an artists sculpture.

In industrial uses, the modern process is called investment casting. An ancient practice, the process today varies from foundry to foundry, but the steps which are usually used in casting small bronze sculptures in a modern bronze foundry are generally quite standardised.
