This is a superb antique gilt bronze and sienna mable sculpture of Reine Isabella, the Queen of Spain, by Eutrope Bouret (1833 - 1906) , and circa 1870 in date.

This exceptionally executed sculpture is in the formal form of a gilt bronze figure of the Queen dressed in full costume, holding a fan and a lette, stood beside a greyhound and raised on a shaped ormolu and Siena marble base. It is signed on the base and has a plaque on the front.

This unusual piece is highly collectable and decorative.

Eutrope Bouret was a French sculptor. Best known for his Neoclassical bronze pieces, he focused on historic themes and mythology while incorporating external materials and devices such as marble, plaster, terracotta and lighting fixtures. Born on April 16, 1833 in Paris, France, he went on to study under the French decorative sculptor Louis-Charles-Hippolyte Buhot. Bouret received commercial and critical success during his lifetime, notably being commissioned to sculpt the tombstone bust of the popular French novelist and fellow bronze sculptor, Alexis Bouvier. He exhibited at the Paris Salon regularly until his death on September 30, 1906 in Paris, France.

Isabella I was hereditary Queen of Castile in her own right and her marriage in 1469 to her cousin, Ferdinand II of Aragon united their kingdoms and transformed Spain into a major European power, paving the way for unification under their grandson, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. During their joint reign, Ferdinand and Isabella expanded their territories, financing Christopher Columbus in his 1492 voyage, which resulted in discovery of the Americas. For their fervent defence of the Catholic faith, they were proclaimed 'The Catholic Kings' by Pope Alexander VI.

Siena Marble
The natural beauty of Italian Siena marble has been prized for its luster and natural beauty throughout history. Giallo Siena marble was formed eons ago when limestone was subjected to intense pressure and heat. The calcite crystals formed like millions of tiny gems locked together, giving the natural Giallo Siena marble its beautiful luster.
