This is a truly magnificent antique Victorian still life oil on canvas painting titled 'A Fruit Piece' and attributed to the British female artist, Maria Margitson (1832-1896), and circa 1870 in date.
This stunning still life is circular in shape and depicts splendid purple and green grapes, plums, red currants and a gorgeous basket of apples, all positioned on a table top.
The quality and degree of realism are superb, we are shown the fruit and their leaves in all their greatest colours details and magnificent nuances. Each fruit overlaps with others and the basket of apples in the background is not allowed its complete outline, a principle which conveys a great sense of abundance and wealth of nature - indeed, this remarkable painting celebrates the delicious, opulent fruits of the earth.
It is framed tondo in the remarkable and original giltwood square frame which is decorated with superb foliate decoration and bears the label,
"A Fruit Piece' MARIA MARGITSON 1832-1896".
In really excellent condition.
