A rare, complete George III antique silver cruet set from Paul Storr, the world-renowned artisan silversmith. The set comprises a beautifully decorative silver cruet stand holding four exquisite condiment bottles traditionally for chili, soy, cayenne and ketchup.
The antique silver cruet stand has gadrooned edging, embellished at the corners with leaf and shell motifs. While the ring holder echoes this detailing, it also features two symmetrical fish, their mouths open to a stream of silver water pouring from a shell which crests the ring’s apex. The bottle-holders are adorned with four silver lions, and we see the lion’s splayed paws as the feet of the stand. This rare and therefore highly desirable Regency silver cruet set by Paul Storr carries the hallmarks for London 1820 and is cleared marked with ‘PS’, the mark of Paul Storr (for more on Paul Storr, see below). This four bottle antique cruet set was produced at the end of the reign of King George III (1760–1820) who was succeeded by his eldest son, King George IV (1820–1830). In excellent condition, the hallmarks on this silver condiment set are clear and there are no signs of repair or any dings or dents to the silverwork, as shown by the photographs above.
More About Paul Storr
Paul Storr (London, 1770–1844) became one of the most lauded silversmiths and goldsmiths of his era. His exquisite pieces were bought by the royal family and others of high social standing, and today, his silverwork can be found in royal palaces, stately homes and museums not just in the United Kingdom, but across the world. This desirable George III antique silver cruet was produced in 1820, when Storr had left the silversmiths and goldsmiths Rundell, Bridge and Rundell in the City of London and was enjoying a period of independence and artistic freedom. At this time, Storr was established as a craftsman of exceptional talent and patronage. In 1822 he partnered with John Mortimer in a new venture, Storr and Mortimer; he continued with Mortimer until his retirement in 1838.
