A George IV sterling silver teapot by world-renowned silversmith, Paul Storr. The circular body features gadroon shoulder detailing and embossed fluting, which is echoed in the fluting on the domed cover.
With its flush hinges – a sign of excellent craftsmanship – the cover is topped with a wood finial, matching the swan’s neck wooden handle. This superb silver teapot is a wonderful example of the elegant design that characterises the exceptional artistry of Paul Storr.
This highly desirable silver teapot carries the hallmarks for London 1826 and is clearly stamped ‘PS’ the maker’s mark of Paul Storr (see below). This antique sterling silver teapot was produced during the short reign of King George IV (1820–1830); its elegant design is typical of the Regency period. In excellent condition, the hallmarks are clear and there are no signs of repair or any dings or dents to the silverwork, as the photographs testify.
More About Paul Storr
Paul Storr was born in London in 1770. Apprenticed in Soho, London, he was to become one of the most lauded silversmiths of his era, commissioned by the royal family, aristocrats and other influential clientele over a career that spanned 45 years. In 1826, when this beautiful George IV silver antique teapot was produced, Storr was in business with John Mortimer in London’s affluent West End; at this point in his career Storr’s artistry was renowned throughout the country. Storr retired in 1838, 12 years after producing this beautiful silver teapot, and just after the beginning of the Victorian age: the fine, elegant lines of Regency style were to change as society turned to elaborate, decorative detailing. Today, Storr silverware can be found across the world, in public museums and in private collections.
