This exquisite antique silver gilt chalice cup bears the makers mark of the renowned silversmith Paul de Lamerie and hallmarks for London 1745.

This George II antique silver chalice has a domed foot and the tall stem with plain beaded knop rises to the bowl which is divided by a wide band. Bearing the mark P.L. in script under a crown over a pellet, this mark was first entered in 1739.

The restrained form shown by this wonderful antique silver chalice illustrates that Paul de Lamerie, at the end of his working life, reverted to simple designs, in this case very similar to his earliest chalice for Milton Cleveden.

This antique silver gilt chalice cup is in excellent condition with the makers mark showing some signs of rubbing.

More About Paul de Lamerie (1688 - 1751)

The Victoria and Albert Museum describes Paul de Lamerie as the ‘greatest silversmith working in England in the 18th century’.

De Lamerie was born in Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands and was the son of a minor French nobleman. His Huguenot parents left France following the Edict of Fontainebleau in 1685 and his father became an officer in the army of William III of Orange and subsequently moved to London in 1689 during the Glorious Revolution.

De Lamerie became an apprentice to a goldsmith of Huguenot origin in 1703 and eventually opened his own workshop in 1713 and became goldsmith to George I in 1716. He worked in partnership with Ellis Gamble who had formerly been the apprentice master of William Hogarth between 1723 and 1728. De Lamerie’s early work was in simple Queen Anne styles following classical French models, but from about 1730 he became noted for his elaborate Rococo style, particularly for the richly-decorated works of an unidentified craftsman, the Maynard Master.

He clientele included the Tsarinas Anna and Catherine, Count Aleksey Bobrinsky, Sir Robert Walpole, the Earl of Ilchester, The Earl of Thanet, Viscount Tyrconnel, the Duke of Bedford and other members of the English upper classes. He also did work for John V of Portugal which included a huge silver bathtub lost in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.

Angelica Kauffman, RA (1741 - 1807)

was a Swiss-born Austrian Neoclassical painter who had a successful career in London and Rome. Though born as "Kauffmann", Kauffman is the preferred spelling of her name in English; it is the form she herself used most in signing her correspondence, documents and paintings.

While Kauffman produced many types of art, she identified herself primarily as a history painter, an unusual designation for a woman artist in the 18th century. History painting, was considered the most elite and lucrative category in academic painting during this time period. Under the direction of Sir Joshua Reynolds, the Royal Academy made a strong effort to promote history painting to a native audience who were more interested in commissioning and buying portraits and landscapes.

Despite the popularity that Kauffman enjoyed in British society and her success as an artist, she was disappointed by the relative apathy that the British had towards history painting. Ultimately she left Britain for the continent, where history painting was better established, held in higher esteem and patronized.

The works of Angelica Kauffman have retained their reputation. By 1911, rooms decorated with her work were still to be seen in various quarters. At Hampton Court was a portrait of the duchess of Brunswick; in the National Portrait Gallery, a self-portrait. There were other pictures by her at Paris, at Dresden, in the Hermitage at St Petersburg, in the Alte Pinakothek atMunich, in Kadriorg Palace, Tallinn (Estonia).
