Buy antique bronzes from one of the UK's premier furniture dealers. We specialise in antique bronze statues, bronze lamps, bronze sculptures and bronze animals. Here at our North London showroom and warehouse we have an astounding range of bronzes in all shapes and sizes, right up to and including a selection of life-size bronze statues to impress and amaze those who set eyes upon them. We also have a range of bronze fountains and bronze water features for your garden or hotel grounds, parks, or other outdoor landscaped areas.

If it’s a traditional decorative bronze sculpture you are looking for, we can help you there too with our large choice of Art Deco Bronze Sculptures and many other works in bronze coming in and out on a regular basis. Something for your desk perhaps or an impressive bronze centerpiece for your dining table - all can be found on this site or at our premises which are open to the public every week day and on selected Saturdays - see the home page for details.

Here at Regent Antiques we offer a comprehensive range of bronze statues and busts, including some which are life-size or even larger and which may be displayed either indoors or outdoors.

Bronze Sculpture, Bronze Statues & Bronze Busts

The use of bronze for casting sculpture is an old one and one which has changed little over the years. There are still plenty of bronze foundries across the UK, but most often found in and around London.

Bronze is an alloy of Copper (around 80%) and Tin although other elements are often added to give the alloy different qualities.

Bronze is particularly useful for making larger statues as it is not brittle, although its relatively high cost, due mainly to the Copper content, has to be taken into consideration. It is not unheard of for large bronze statues to be stolen and melted down due to the high value of the alloy.

The bronze bust is of course a firm favourite and all of the “usual suspects” are represented from time to time. The Emperor Napoleon, the Duke of Wellington, William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar and a host of other Roman luminaries are all amongst those regularly featured in bronze busts.

Bronze Fountains & Outdoor Bronze Statues

Many of our bronze statues are suitable for use outdoors. Bronze is an alloy that doesn’t rust, as it contains no iron, but it can corrode over time - however this tends to give it an even more attractive patinated appearance which is often sought after by enthusiasts. Bronze then is ideal for use outdoors and is the medium of choice for outdoor and public sculpture in towns and cities all over the world.

With that in mind, we are always pleased to be able to offer statues that would fit in nicely with your garden at home or of course with larger gardens, parks, hotels and larger estates. Many of our pieces have been made - or adapted - for use as fountains and water features so please be sure to ask about those if that is what you are looking for.

A visit to our London showroom would enable you to see several examples of bronze statues that are of a size that could only really be displayed in a large building with high ceilings or outdoors. Everything from horses, horses and riders, large animals such as bears and elephants, Roman gladiators and warriors, and even a life-sized statue of physicist Albert Einstein sitting on a bench have all featured in our inventory from time to time.

Bronzes of animals are particularly popular for outdoor use with the horse or horse and rider being amongst the most popular subjects along with bears and deer. Let's not forget bronze statues of birds though, we always have examples of large bronze statues of birds for our showroom and website visitors to look at including ever popular subjects like eagles, owls and others.

Art Deco Bronze Statues and other Art Deco Bronzes

The Art Deco movement which came to prominence in the 1920s and 1930s was very fond of bronze as a medium for expressing the lovely lines and curves which were so much a part of its ethos.

As a result, there were a number of prominent artists and sculptors who specialised in producing bronze sculptures including Demétre Chiparus, Ferdinand Preiss, Paul Phillipe and many more. We have examples, usually recasts of the original pieces, by all of these well-known Art Deco sculptors in our showroom for you to see.

Bronze Animal Sculptures

Animal sculptures are always popular, for two main reasons: firstly they are popular with those who have a love of animals and birds and who collect a variety of decorative pieces which feature animals in many different styles and materials, secondly, there are those who focus on bronze animal sculpture and we are able to display a large collection ranging from small pieces suitable for the display cabinet, the table top, desk top or sideboard, right up to larger than life-sized bronze horses, bears and other impressive animals which are predominantly used for display outdoors.

Bronze Lamps and Lighting

Although most bronze sculpture is designed to be placed on display and looked at and admired, we do also stock bronze pieces that have been adapted, or were originally designed, to be lamps or light sources of one sort or another. Bronze table lamps, wall lights and other examples are well represented in our showroom but we also usually have larger items of bronze lighting available which may be suitable for use outdoors.

Bronzes are available for a variety of purposes and to suit many different tastes. Pair Bronze Napoleonic Soldiers Drummer & Rifleman 20th C

Pair Bronze Napoleonic Soldiers Drummer & Rifleman 20th C

Here’s a pair of military statues dating from the latter part of the last century and of interest to Napoleonic Wars enthusiasts and collectors. This is a very fine pair of medium sized bronze statues depicting two soldiers from the time of the Napoleonic war, which is generally taken to be 1803 - 1815 although some define the time period as being somewhat longer. One of the soldiers in the pair is a rifleman and the other is a drummer. These bronze military statues have been skilfully recast from an original sculpture by a well known 19th Century French artist – E.H Dumaige (1830-1880), whose replica signature they appears on the works. As is so often the case, these statues have been cast using the widely used lost wax process. They have retained a remarkable level of fine detail due to the accuracy of this process and are sure to appeal to both collector of bronzes and to enthusiasts of military collectables alike. Antique Pair French Ormolu Cherub Candelabra Table Lamps C1870

Antique Pair French Ormolu Cherub Candelabra Table Lamps C1870

Dating from around 1870 this pair of antique table lamps started life as ormolu candelabra and were converted to table lamps at a later date. This magnificent pair of antique table lamps are wonderfully decorated with fabulous gilt bronze foliate scrolls and playful seated cherubs who are draped with flowers against the fabulous ormolu lamp bases. These antique table lamps are incredibly decorative and will add a luxury and glamour to any room in which they are placed. The modelling and craftsmanship is truly fantastic and standing at 75cm (2 feet, 5 inches) they are eye catching and sure to become a talking point. The use of cherubs in art and decorative objects has a long and fascinating history. Cherubs such as those depicted on this pair of antique table lamps were ‘invented’ by artists such as Raphael during the Italian Renaissance to show male babies or toddlers to represent the presence of pure love around people. Called ‘putti’ (coming from the Latin word puttus meaning “boy), they were often depicted with wings like angels. About the same time the classical god of love, Cupid also started to be depicted as a baby or young child often with angelic wings as well. The association of ‘putti’ with cherubim angels was a small leap as both were concerned with love and purity and so the word ‘cherub’ began to refer not only to the angels but also ‘putti’. However, in reality there is a great deal of difference between these romantic and playful cherubs and the rank of angels known as cherubim. The latter are depicted in the Bible as fiercely strong and exotic creatures with multiple faces, wings and eyes, very different from those depicted on this pair of antique table lamps. These antique table lamps are in really excellent condition as can be seen from the in-depth selection of photographs we have provided for you to look at. They have been fully cleaned and professionally rewired in our workshops so you can be assured that they are in full working order. You can see many more bronzes here and more lighting items here. Antique Pair Regency Style Ormolu Wall Lights Appliques 19th C

Antique Pair Regency Style Ormolu Wall Lights Appliques 19th C

This fantastic pair of Regency style twin branch antique ormolu wall lights date from the late 19th century. Featuring classical Regency elements, this fabulous pair of antique ormolu wall lights have anthemion, classical urn and palmette cast backplates that issue forth twin reeded scrolled branches. Originally designed as candelabra, they were later adapted for the use of electricity. The Regency style has had many revivals. The original era is commonly defined as spanning a period of about forty years from around 1795 to 1837 and is named after the Prince Regent who ruled as proxy for his father, George III until his death in 1820 and then took over as George IV. The period was one of great achievement and cultural refinement in Britain and furniture and interior design incorporated the motivations and inspirations of the Prince Regent who favoured the classical design of ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt. This pair of antique ormolu wall lights shows off many of the elements of Regency style including the use of classical urns and the palmette or anthemion. Ormolu is a technique for coating bronze, brass, copper or other metals with gold. The original process involved coating the item in an amalgam of finely ground high-cart gold and mercury and then firing this in a kiln. The mercury would ‘burn off’ in the process leaving the metal beautifully gilded with the gold. The process had to be changed with the use of Mercury being banned in the 1830s and it was replaced with the electroplating method, which is the one used today. This pair of antique ormolu wall lights have been created using the latter method. They are in excellent condition having been cleaned and fully rewired and PAT tested. You can see the condition of this pair of antique ormolu wall lights for yourself by taking a few moments to review the photographs. Explore our range of antique and period lighting here. Life Size Bronze Roman Armoured Cavalry Officer on Horseback

Life Size Bronze Roman Armoured Cavalry Officer on Horseback

This large and impressive piece is an ornately decorated life size bronze sculpture of a heavily armored Roman Cavalry officer mounted on horseback. It would certainly not be an exaggeration to describe this life size bronze sculpture as “impressive”. Quite apart from its sheer size, the subject matter would always demand a second look, even at a smaller scale. Dressed to impress, the Roman Cavalry officer depicted in this piece is wearing armour that is decorated in high relief including symbols depicting angelic maidens as well as a wide range of phoenixes, goblins, wolfs, winged horses and, of course, eagles. Perhaps the most impressive feature of the warrior’s uniform is the cavalry parade helmet which has an eagle and feathered crest. Such details are nice but it is the overall impact of this work being of such an impressive size that is the real show stopper here. This life size bronze statue of a Roman Officer really does stop you in your tracks when you encounter it for the first time. Condition We are delighted to be able to offer this bronze sculpture for sale in really superb condition. It is a major piece of work and you should be sure to check out the photographs to satisfy yourself as to its condition. You are cordially invited to visit our London showroom and view the piece for yourself. Antique Pair French Ormolu Classical Maidens Dancing Early C1820

Antique Pair French Ormolu Classical Maidens Dancing Early C1820

This is a delightful pair of antique French ormolu classical maidens dancing. Dating from around 1820, they are dressed in classical Greek style and the folds of their garments are wonderfully represented each with a clasp fastening on the right shoulder. They have captivating facial expressions and finely detailed hair gathered into laurel crowns. They have different poses, with one being transported by the sound of the music of the spheres and the other accompanying the unheard music with a pair of hand cymbals. They are raised on cylindrical socles with square plinth bases with excellent chasing and detail. The first was during the 12th to 14th centuries when metal objects were decorated using the champleve technique. Most of these items were religious objects. The use of enamel again became popular in the 15th century with the development of painted enamel and Limoges became a leading centre during the French Renaissance. Luxury pieces such as plaques, plates and ewers were painted with Mannerist decoration depicting pictorial figure scenes surrounded by elaborate borders. Narrative scenes were the most popular in both periods and reflected the styles of their periods with the medieval style being simpler than the later Renaissance style. The technique went into decline from about 1630 with the rise of popularity of porcelain. However, it was revived in the mid 19th century and adopted Art Nouveau and other contemporary styles. Antique Pair Large Empire Ormolu Bronze Candelabra C1860

Antique Pair Large Empire Ormolu Bronze Candelabra C1860

Dating from around 1860, this is an exquisite large antique pair of dark patinated bronze and gilded ormolu five light, four branch Empire candelabra. Each of these candelabra is cast as a classical muse and stands on canted square plinths cast with acanthus. This beautiful pair of bronze candelabra are in elegant Empire style, a neoclassical style prevalent in France during the first part of the 19th century. We bought these on our last buying trip to Montpelier. Condition These ormolu bronze candelabra are in excellent original condition. Please check the photographs for confirmation of this. More About Empire Style The Empire style that these ormolu bronze candelabra are typical of, was an early 19th century design movement that spanned not only the decorative arts and furniture, but also architecture and the visual arts in Europe and America. The style originated in France during the reign of Napoleon I taking its name from the First French Empire where it was intended to idealize Napoleon’s leadership. It corresponds to the Regency style in England, the Biedermeier style in German-speaking lands and the Federal style in the United States. The overall design ethic was based on aspects of the Roman Empire and is considered the second phase of neoclassicism which was so popular throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries. Motifs draw heavily from ancient Greek and Roman symbols and ornamentation, as is the case with these dark patinated bronze and gilded ormolu candelabra which display figures of the Muses, ancient Greek goddesses. More About Ormolu Ormolu is the 18th century English term used to describe the French method for gilding bronze with a fine gold veneer. Involving coating the item with a mercury amalgam containing high-carat fine powdered gold, the item would then be fired in a kiln ensuring the mercury was driven off leaving the golden gilt surface. However, the method using mercury was outlawed in France in the 1830s, due to the toxic nature of mercury. In more modern times electroplating was used to gild bronze and other metals, although some authorities believe that the mercury method produced a better quality finish. Brown Patinated Bronze Bust of Michelangelo& 39 s David

Brown Patinated Bronze Bust of Michelangelo's David

We are delighted to present this wonderfully detailed bronze bust of Michelangelo’s David dating from the last quarter of the 20th Century. The dark brown patinated bronze bust of David has a wonderfully sensitive modeled face and is a copy of the masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture produced by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504 in Florence. The statue represents the biblical hero David who was a popular subject in Florentine Art during this period. It has the inscription ‘Michelangelo’ on the rear and has been produced using the ‘lost wax’ method. Condition As you can see from the photos, this brown patinated bronze bust of Michelangelo’s David is in excellent condition. More About Michelangelo’s Statue of David This statue is recognised as one of the true masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance. It is of a male nude representing the biblical hero David. It was originally commissioned as one of a series of statues to be positioned along the roofline of the east end of Florence Cathedral, but instead was placed in the public square outside the Palazzo della Signoria, the seat of civic government in Florence. It was unveiled on 8th September 1504. The statue came to represent the defense of civil liberties embodied by the Republic of Florence, a small but magnificently wealthy state which felt itself threatened on all sides by more powerful states and by the dominance of the Medici Family. It was moved to the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence in 1873 with a replica being placed in the original location later on. Additional Information About The ‘Lost Wax’ Method of Bronze Bust Manufacturing Widely used by the majority of civilizations around the world, bronze busts have been created by this approach since the very earliest times. The method uses a wax version of the item to be cast, which is covered in plaster or clay to create a mold. The wax is heated and emptied once the mold is dry. If a hollow bronze bust is required then the wax model is made around a heat proof center. Molten bronze is put into the mold and left to dry. Once the metal has cooled off completely, the mold is broken open to reveal the bronze bust inside. More Information and Viewing Arrangements In relation to bronze busts of this standard it is normally preferable to view them in person. Still we know that this is not always feasible. You are welcome to email us or call us using the contact details shown above with any considerations you might have about this delightful brown patinated bronze bust of Michelangelo’s David. Art Deco Style Bronze Girl with a Shawl and Platter

Art Deco Style Bronze Girl with a Shawl and Platter

Of interest to bronze lovers and in particular, lovers of Art Deco bronze statues, this is an eye-catching Art Deco style bronze statuette in a typical Art Deco pose dating from the latter part of the 20th century. The naked woman is portrayed holding a platter with a dramatic shawl flowing almost to the ground. Holding a balletic pose typical of Art Deco figures, she stands on a three stepped square plinth. The quality and unique design of this Art Deco style bronze statuette is superb and it is sure to be treasured by any discerning admirer of fine art and the Art Deco period. This Art Deco style bronze statuette was produced using the traditional "lost wax" process, otherwise known as the "cire perdue" method, which enables pieces with a high level of detail to be cast. Condition This bronze statuette is in excellent condition. Please see the photographs for confirmation of this. More About The ‘Lost Wax’ Method of Bronze Casting This extremely old method of casting bronze statues and bronze statuettes has been used since at least the third millennium BCE and has changed very little to this day. It involves creating a wax model of the statue or piece that is to be cast. This is then coated with a suitable substance, such as plaster, to create a mold. Once the mold is dry, the wax is heated and drained off leaving the space into which to pour the molten bronze. If a hollow bronze is required, then the wax model is built around a heat-resistant core which does not melt and so ensures that the centre of the cast bronze statue will be hollow. More About the Art Deco Style This became a very influential visual arts style and first appeared in France in the 1920s. It flourished internationally during the 1930s and 1940s. An eclectic style, it combined both traditional craft motifs with ‘Machine Age’ imagery and materials. The early style featured rich colours, lavish ornamentation and bold geometric shapes. It is distinguished from its predecessor Art Nouveau by its embrace of technology and new materials such as plastic. It developed over time to accommodate the requirements of mass production and the earlier lavish decoration gave way to more streamlined shapes and curves. During its heyday Art Deco represented all that was luxurious, glamorous and exuberant and expressed faith in technological and social progress. Stunning Bronze Sculpture Classical Lady Two Cherubs

Stunning Bronze Sculpture Classical Lady Two Cherubs

This is a lovely classical bronze sculpture of a lady with two cherubs. She is depicted leaning against a fence rail and has turned her head to hear something the cherub on her right is saying as he perches on the fence rail beside her. The other cherub is hovering behind her left shoulder and appears to be trying to attract her attention with his left hand reaching upwards. The detailing of her classical garb, which shows wonderfully draped folds with two clasps at her shoulder is delicate and distinctly gives the impression of a very fine linen or chiffon as her legs show through. There is a lovely sense of movement and one can almost hear the sound of the fluttering wings of the cherubs as they hover beside the woman. Dating from the late 20th century and mounted on a marble base, this bronze sculpture of a lady with two cherubs is in excellent condition as can be seen from the photographs in the gallery of images we have provided for this piece. Wild Bear Catching Fish Bronze Sculpture After Milo

Wild Bear Catching Fish Bronze Sculpture After Milo

A bronze statue of a wild bear, recast from the artist’s original depicting the magnificent bear in the act of catching a fish. This is an interesting and lifelike bronze sculpture of a wild grizzly bear with a fish in his mouth. This bronze statue dates from the latter quarter of the 20th century. The lost wax method of casting these bronzes is very good at retaining a high level of detail and that is certainly the case here. A close inspection will reveal the quality of the modelling to the creature's head and body and the wonderful rendition of its fur. The unfortunate fish is also nicely modelled and adds a note of natural reality to the piece. The bronze bear is set upon an attractive marble base and bears a replica signature of Milo. A closer look at the pictures will convince you that we are being very straightforward when we describe it as being in excellent condition and on sale at a very reasonable price.
