Bronze Sculpture, Bronze Statues & Bronze Busts

The use of bronze for casting sculpture is an old one and one which has changed little over the years. There are still plenty of bronze foundries across the UK, but most often found in and around London.

Bronze is an alloy of Copper (around 80%) and Tin although other elements are often added to give the alloy different qualities.

Bronze is particularly useful for making larger statues as it is not brittle, although its relatively high cost, due mainly to the Copper content, has to be taken into consideration. It is not unheard of for large bronze statues to be stolen and melted down due to the high value of the alloy.

The bronze bust is of course a firm favourite and all of the “usual suspects” are represented from time to time. The Emperor Napoleon, the Duke of Wellington, William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar and a host of other Roman luminaries are all amongst those regularly featured in bronze busts.

Bronze Fountains & Outdoor Bronze Statues

Many of our bronze statues are suitable for use outdoors. Bronze is an alloy that doesn’t rust, as it contains no iron, but it can corrode over time - however this tends to give it an even more attractive patinated appearance which is often sought after by enthusiasts. Bronze then is ideal for use outdoors and is the medium of choice for outdoor and public sculpture in towns and cities all over the world.

With that in mind, we are always pleased to be able to offer statues that would fit in nicely with your garden at home or of course with larger gardens, parks, hotels and larger estates. Many of our pieces have been made - or adapted - for use as fountains and water features so please be sure to ask about those if that is what you are looking for.

A visit to our London showroom would enable you to see several examples of bronze statues that are of a size that could only really be displayed in a large building with high ceilings or outdoors. Everything from horses, horses and riders, large animals such as bears and elephants, Roman gladiators and warriors, and even a life-sized statue of physicist Albert Einstein sitting on a bench have all featured in our inventory from time to time.

Bronzes of animals are particularly popular for outdoor use with the horse or horse and rider being amongst the most popular subjects along with bears and deer. Art Deco Bronze Statues and other Art Deco Bronzes

The Art Deco movement which came to prominence in the 1920s and 1930s was very fond of bronze as a medium for expressing the lovely lines and curves which were so much a part of its ethos.

As a result, there were a number of prominent artists and sculptors who specialised in producing bronze sculptures including Demétre Chiparus, Ferdinand Preiss, Paul Phillipe and many more. We have examples, usually recasts of the original pieces, by all of these well-known Art Deco sculptors in our showroom for you to see.

Bronze Animal Sculptures

Animal sculptures are always popular, for two main reasons: firstly they are popular with those who have a love of animals and birds and who collect a variety of decorative pieces which feature animals in many different styles and materials, secondly, there are those who focus on bronze animal sculpture and we are able to display a large collection ranging from small pieces suitable for the display cabinet, the table top, desk top or sideboard, right up to larger than life-sized bronze horses, bears and other impressive animals which are predominantly used for display outdoors.

Bronze Lamps and Lighting

Although most bronze sculpture is designed to be placed on display and looked at and admired, we do also stock bronze pieces that have been adapted, or were originally designed, to be lamps or light sources of one sort or another. Bronze table lamps, wall lights and other examples are well represented in our showroom but we also usually have larger items of bronze lighting available which may be suitable for use outdoors.

Large Patinated Bronze Figure of "Docklands Express" by Philip Blacker Date 1993

A large fine patinated bronze sculpture titled "Docklands Express" by Philip Blacker (1949-  British), dated 1993. The sculpture features a horse called Docklands Express and jockey Peter Scudamore in action clearing a hurdle. It is signed on the base with incised initials, inscribed 93 and mounted on a stepped walnut base. This is one of eight made for the owners after the 1992 Grand National.   This high quality hot cast solid bronze was produced using the traditional "lost wax" process, otherwise known as the "cire perdue" method. A champion at Kempton and a podium finisher at Cheltenham, Docklands Express was the 15/2 favourite for the 1992 Grand National. Despite a strong start, the bay gelding - ridden by champion jockey Peter Scudamore - fell to a nonetheless respectable fourth-place finish as Carl Llewellyn’s Party Politics came out on top. Of interest to animal lovers and lovers of fine quality bronze animal statues is this fine pair of Large Bronze Stag Statuettes, which are made in the style of Moigniez. Collectors of bronze animal statues take particular note. This is a handsome pair of bronze stags, bearing the replica signature of well known French sculptor Jules Moigniez, (28 May 1835 – 29 May 1894) and dating from the latter part of the 20th Century. These bronze stags have been cast in bronze using the lost wax process. They re mounted onto lovely black marble bases. The animals have been captured forever in a scene in which they appear nervous, standing cautiously on a rocky outcrop, ready to take flight as the slightest sign of danger. We would recommend that you take a close look at the photographs provided in order to appreciate the level of attention to detail which has been put to work here and in particular the large and impressive antlers. Ideally placed together, but they could be split if you wish, these bronze stag statuettes will add interest and style to any setting in which they are placed. Jules Moigniez was a successful and highly sought after 19th century animal sculptor, renowned for the exquisite detail of his bronzes of many different types of animal including horses, birds, dogs as well as many farm animals. A large fine Art Deco patinated bronze figure of "The Riverman" by Maurice Guiraud-Rivière (French, 1881-1947), circa 1920 in date. This powerful sculpture is modelled and cast as a muscled semi-clad male clad only in a loin cloth and bearing his back into the arm of a large tiller. The bronze is raised on a rectangular black marble plinth base and is signed Guiraud-Rivière and with ETLINGHAM PARIS and BRONZE foundry stamps.   This high quality antique hot cast solid bronze was produced using the traditional "lost wax" process, otherwise known as the "cire perdue" method. Antique Bronze Sculpture of The Dying Gaul by B Boschetti Rome, 19th C

This is a truly magnificent antique Italian Grand Tour figural  golden patinated bronze sculpture depicting a wounded gladiator known as  "The Dying Gaul", and signed B Boschetti, Roma, circa 1830 in date.  This striking classical sculpture is after the original antique Roman marble sculpture found in the Capitoline Museum in the early 17th Century, which is itself a copy of an ancient Hellenistic bronze sculpture commissioned by Attalus of Pergamon in 230-220 BC to celebrate his victory over the Galatians.   This exquisitely executed bronze sculpture depicts the wounded naked dying gladiator with remarkable realism and pathos. He is beautifully featured as a Celtic warrior with curly hairstyle and has a characteristic band of twisted metal around his neck. He lies on his fallen shield while his sword lies beside him on the right-hand side and his head is looking downward in dignified sorrow. He is raised on an antico rosso oval plinth on bun feet and is signed B Boschetti Roma, on one end of the bronze.   The attention to detail throughout this piece is second to none.    Add a classical dimension to your home with this captivating Italian Grand Tour sculpture.  Condition: In really excellent condition, please see photos for confirmation..

This is a large French bronze sculpture of Vercingetorix with his son by Emile Laporte (1858 - 1901), circa 1890 in date. The standing figure of Vercingetorix wearing a winged helmet, with arm raised pointing into the distance, a figure of a of his son at his side, holding an axe in his right hand, raised on a rectangular naturalistically cast base, signed and numbered M585 & Salon Des Beaux Arts, Paris on the base.   Emile Laporte was a French sculptor (1858 Paris to 1907) who attended the Academy in Paris and was a student of Gabriel-Jules Thomas, Augustin Dumont, Jean-Marie Bonnassieux and Louis-Ernest Barrias. Hi exhibited his work at the Salon of French artists from 1881, his last work exhibited there dates from 1905.   The attention to detail is absolutely fantastic and the sculpture is extremely life-like.   Condition:   In really excellent condition, please see photos for confirmation.

Vintage Highly Detailed Pair of Large Bronze Giraffes Late 20th Century

This is a gorgeous large pair of bronze giraffes, dating from the last quarter of the 20th century.   These life-like bronze statues feature two delightful giraffes, one with her head down in search for grass and one standing tall with head upright. Both statues are very realistic - they feature the typical short mane runs down the length of their long necks, and their coat is covered with a blocky pattern. Indeed, their heads are topped with bony horns, and their tails are tipped with a tuft of fur.    Equally at home indoors or outdoors, this fantastic bronze garden ornaments of two giraffes could be placed to dramatic effect in many locations.    Imagine having this lovely pair of bronze giraffes artfully placed in a garden woodland or perhaps as an arresting feature in a large vestibule or hall. This is a large Spanish bronze sculpture of a street urchin by the renowned Catalan sculptor Charles Anfrie, 1833-1905 and Circa 1890 in date.   The standing figure of a youth in traditional costume holding a cigarillo, on a circular rocky outcrop base. The artist is best known for his sculptures of young children in playful or joyous depictions.  The work is signed in cast to the base C. It features an inset hand painted porcelain panel painted with a portrait of Marie Antoinette. This is a beautiful large antique French Grand Tour dark patinated bronze and ormolu jardiniere, Circa 1830 in date. This stunning bronze is superbly cast and has an elegant brown patina. The jardiniere features a beaded rim, bifurcated vinestock handles with ormolu cherubs blowing trumpets and a body cast with frolicking cherubs. It is raised on an oval ormolu base with laurel leaf decoration, retains the original liner and weighs just under 20 kgs ( 44lbs). The attention to detail throughout this piece is second to none and this high quality bronze is made from the lost wax process 'cire perdue'. This is a stunning antique pair of patinated bronze reclining Classical semi-nude sculptures of young ladies mounted on carved marble bases, circa 1880 in date. These exceptionally sculptured bronze figures feature two beautiful youthful women sitting graciously with their legs crossed in a reclining pose on a rock that has an elevated back. These delightful and elegant Classical ladies wear an archaic cloth on their upper legs while they are nude from the upper thighs up - ladies in antiquity were depicted in such a way. This is an impressive and highly decorative French gilt bronze and Limoges enamel table mirro, Signed, F.Bienvue, Limoges and  Circa 1880 in date. The enamelled portrait roundel on a floral ground with swag and acanthus leaves, fitted with a bevelled mirror verso, raised on tapered uprights and scrolled acanthus-form feet. Acanthus leaves embellish the feet and legs and a posy of flowers adorns the top of the column at each side. The richly coloured enamel portrait shows the subject with her head turned, almost looking over her shoulder and towards the viewer. It is signed on the left hand side by the master emailleur F. This is an absolutely fabulous antique  French "Japonesque" ormolu mounted porcelain tripod dish, late 19th Century in date. It bears the signature of Louis-Pierre Malpass, one of the most important porcelain painters of his time. Beautifully hand painted with a central panel depicting a Japanese man wearing a conical straw hat with two swords in his belt.  The panel painted on an ornately decorated cream ground with a Bleu Celeste border and decorative gilded highlights. The stunning ormolu mount decorated in relief with birds, butterflies and foliage, with pierced oriental style handles and riased on  claw feet   Condition: In really excellent condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs, please see photos for confirmation.

A superb antique Italian Grand Tour  patinated bronze sculpture of St Peter seated on a bronze  throne, circa 1880 in date. This patinated bronze sculpture of St. Peter is after the original by Arnolfo di Cambio (1245-1302) in St. Peters basilica in Rome. It features St. Peter seated upon a carved marble throne holding the key to heaven with his arm raised to give his blessing. This high quality hot cast solid bronze was produced using the traditional "lost wax" process, otherwise known as the "cire perdue" method.   The craftsmanship is second to none throughout all aspects of this beautiful  sculpture. It features twin handles to either side and the centre is inset with a beautiful Limoges enamel plaque depicting a lady in Renaissance clothing. The central column of this lamp stands on four ormolu dolphins which are raised on a marble socle that rests on an ormolu base. The craftsmanship in this vintage ormolu and marble table lamp in the Louis Revival style is second to none throughout all aspects of this ormolu and marble table lamp and it is sure to add an unparalleled touch of elegance to your home. More About Ormolu Ormolu is another term for gilded brass produced using a process that used mercury nitrate and mercury amalgam to coat a bronze or other metal surface with finely powdered gold. Once the object had been coated with the amalgam it was fired in a kiln at very high temperatures and the mercury would burn off leaving a gold coloured gilt veneer. No true ormolu has been produced since the 1830s when the use of mercury was banned in France due to its toxicity. More modern methods include using electroplating to gild bronze. This wonderful bronze statue depicts the goddess Venus emerging from the sea as a fully grown woman modelled on the famous painting by Botticelli. He painted it in 1486 and it has gone on to become one of the most iconic paintings of all time, representing the flourishing of the new artistic aesthetic of the Renaissance. The detailing is superb and it was made using the traditional ‘lost wax’ method. Condition As can be seen from the photographs, this bronze statue of Venus is in excellent condition. More About The ‘Lost Wax’ Technique of Bronze Statue Casting Used by most societies all over the globe, bronze sculptures have been manufactured by this means since at least the 3rd millennium BCE. The procedure makes use of a wax model of the piece to be cast, which is coated in plaster or clay to create a mold. The wax is heated and drained off once the mold is set. If a hollow bronze statue is required then the wax model is manufactured around a heat proof core. Molten bronze is poured into the mold and left to set. Once the metal has cooled enough, the mold is broken open to show the bronze statue inside.
