Whytock & Reid
was a prestigious, internationally recognized cabinetmaking, upholstery, and interior design firm based in Edinburgh. Founded in 1807 and holding a Royal Warrant for over 150 years, the company was celebrated for its bespoke craftsmanship before it closed in 2004.

Origins: Originally established in 1807 by Richard and William Whytock, the business originally retailed drapery. In 1876, the firm amalgamated with the Reid family's upholstery business.

Craftsmanship: They were renowned for high-quality, distinctive Scottish cabinetmaking, often utilizing native woods like ash, birch, and oak.
Notable Collaborations: They had a long and celebrated partnership with the renowned Scottish architect and designer Sir Robert Lorimer, crafting bespoke furniture and woodwork for his architectural commissions.

Prominent Commissions: Alongside outfitting private castles and palaces, they furnished boardrooms for the Bank of Scotland and luxury liners on the Clyde

Flame Mahogany
Thomas Sheraton
 - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.
