This is a bronze sculpture of a Bedouin warrior on a camel making his stately way across the desert. Holding a spear with a rifle slung on his back, this incredibly lifelike bronze sculpture summons up the ambience of the hot Saharan sands with the camel bedecked in wonderfully detailed fringed saddle cloth and saddle and a beautifully rendered rope halter. The cross legged pose of the Bedouin warrior slightly leaning back lends poise and charm and it takes very little to imagine this Bedouin warrior navigating the difficult terrain on his ship of the desert.

Recast from an original it bears the replica signature of Agathon Leonard, the famous French sculptor who was working in Paris from the late 19th to early 20th century. Mounted on an attractive marble base, this bronze sculpture of a Bedouin warrior will be sure to bring the waft of exotic climes to any setting you may choose for it.

Lost Wax Method
sometimes called by the French name of cire perdue or the Latin, cera perduta is the process by which a bronze or brass is cast from an artists sculpture.

In industrial uses, the modern process is called investment casting. An ancient practice, the process today varies from foundry to foundry, but the steps which are usually used in casting small bronze sculptures in a modern bronze foundry are generally quite standardised.

Agathon Léonard or Léonard Agathon van Weydevelt (1841 Lille - 1923 Paris), was a French Art Nouveau sculptor.

Belgian by birth, Léonard moved to Paris when quite young and studied sculpture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris under Eugène Delaplanche. He became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1887 and a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1897.

He regularly exhibited across France, and was made a chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1900. Some of his best-known works are studies of dancers, such as La Cothurne (Tragic Pose from Le Jeu d'escharpe), modeled in 1895 and cast in 1900.

The Play of the Scarf, executed in a characteristic fin-de-siècle manner and rendered in gilt, showed a dancer in a flowing gown with a billowing scarf held above her head.

This piece was produced in 1897, was inspired by the renowned dancer, Lois Fuller and was displayed as a table centerpiece at the 1900 World's Fair at the Pavillon de Sèvres in Paris.

Bronze casting of Léonard's work was carried out by the Susse Frères Editeurs foundry. Besides bronze, he also produced works in marble and quartz. His bas-relief of St. Cecilia is to be found in the Abbeville Museum and the Nantes Museum houses a bust titled The Plunderer of Shipwrecks.

Léonard also produced Art Nouveau medallions, statuettes and pottery.
