This is an absolutely stunning bespoke new leather 'Gainsborough chair' in a beautiful antique chestnut colour, hand-made in England with materials of the finest quality.

Height is adjustable with swivel/tilt mechanism.

‘Old English’ is an aniline-finished leather that is tanned to ensure a pleasing distressed or ‘aged’ finish from new. Extra fat liquors are applied during tanning to give the leather a slightly waxy feel. These leathers are designed to allow the natural marking variations of the leather to show through to the finish coat.

Pull-up leathers do not have a consistent colour density across the whole hide and are designed to change colour and sheen when pulled or stretched. They are not as colour fast as pigmented hides and are designed to allow furniture to age and relax through use and over time. Evidence of marks and scarring will be seen through the surface finish.

The studding is achieved with close individual nails / studs not by using strips, and each nail is individually hammered in by hand.

The show wood on the swivel chairs is solid mahogany and the frames are made from solid beech, so we only use hardwoods.

Seats have individual double cone hand springing, each spring is hand sewn to the beechwood frame. The filling is canvas, fibre and felt.

The effect can be very pleasing although bear in mind that this hand-dyed leather can fade in direct sunlight.

Handmade English furniture of this quality can last for generations if well-cared for.

Available in other colours upon request.

Bespoke orders and wholesale enquiries welcome.

Gainsborough chair
(also known as a Martha Washington chair in the United States) is a type of armchair made in England in the eighteenth century. The chair was wide, with a high back, open sides and short arms, and was normally upholstered in leather. Contemporaries referred to it as a 'French chair', as the most elaborate styles were based on French Rococo chairs from the Louis XV period.
