This is a very large bespoke handmade Victorian style large marquetry dining table with a set of 16 matching chairs.

Crafted in burr walnut the large dining table, or conference table, is styled after a victorian dining table and features high quality marquetry which is carried out by expert, third generation craftsmen (and women). It is also available as a bespoke item with marquetry decoration to meet your own requirements - call for details.

Seating sixteen people in total comfort, this is an exceptional piece of luxury marquetry furniture which will add a focal point to any room. This large table is appropriate for a company board room, a conference room or, of course, a dining room. It could also be placed in a commercial space such as a feature piece in a hotel dining room or lobby and wherever it is placed it is certain to be a topic of conversation, so rarely do you see tables this large and imposing.

As a result of its beautifully figured grain, fine quality burr walnut has been used for centuries by the very best furniture makers. The main feature of this large marquetry dining table is not the grain of the burr walnut, although that is truly wonderful, but the intricate and delicate inlaid marquetry foliate decoration.

The hand cut inlaid marquetry depicting entwined leaves and flowers is made from veneers of different shades. To further highlight the natural grain of the burr walnut and the artistic excellence marquetry, this table has been French polished by hand.

By way of support, the considerable weight of this large dining table stands on six carved legs which are terminated with brass cap castors for easy movement around the room.

Matching Set of 16 Chairs

The matching set of 16 chairs included in the dining table & chairs set comprises fourteen side chairs together with a pair of armchairs. These chairs are constructed from solid walnut, and, like the table they accompany, have been beautifully French polished. They are upholstered, also feature delicate marquetry decoration which is painstakingly hand cut to match the table. As with the table, the marquetry on the chairs can also be customised to suit your requirements, at extra cost.

Angelica Kauffman, RA (1741 - 1807)

was a Swiss-born Austrian Neoclassical painter who had a successful career in London and Rome. Though born as "Kauffmann", Kauffman is the preferred spelling of her name in English; it is the form she herself used most in signing her correspondence, documents and paintings.

While Kauffman produced many types of art, she identified herself primarily as a history painter, an unusual designation for a woman artist in the 18th century. History painting, was considered the most elite and lucrative category in academic painting during this time period. Under the direction of Sir Joshua Reynolds, the Royal Academy made a strong effort to promote history painting to a native audience who were more interested in commissioning and buying portraits and landscapes.

Despite the popularity that Kauffman enjoyed in British society and her success as an artist, she was disappointed by the relative apathy that the British had towards history painting. Ultimately she left Britain for the continent, where history painting was better established, held in higher esteem and patronized.

The works of Angelica Kauffman have retained their reputation. By 1911, rooms decorated with her work were still to be seen in various quarters. At Hampton Court was a portrait of the duchess of Brunswick; in the National Portrait Gallery, a self-portrait. There were other pictures by her at Paris, at Dresden, in the Hermitage at St Petersburg, in the Alte Pinakothek atMunich, in Kadriorg Palace, Tallinn (Estonia).

Satinwood

is a hard and durable wood with a satinlike sheen, much used in cabinetmaking, especially in marquetry. It comes from two tropical trees of the family Rutaceae (rue family). East Indian or Ceylon satinwood is the yellowish or dark-brown heartwood of Chloroxylon swietenia.

The lustrous, fine-grained, usually figured wood is used for furniture, cabinetwork, veneers, and backs of brushes. West Indian satinwood, sometimes called yellow wood, is considered superior. It is the golden yellow, lustrous, even-grained wood found in the Florida Keys and the West Indies.

It has long been valued for furniture. It is also used for musical instruments, veneers, and other purposes. Satinwood is classified in the division Magnoliophyta, class Magnoliopsida, order Sapindales, family Rutaceae.
