Canterbury is a small, very beautiful town in Kent that is famous for its ancient Cathedral which has, for centuries, been the destination for pilgrims as was made famous in Chaucer’s epic book, “The Canterbury Tales”. It is also famous for the goings-on in years gone by in which a previous Archbishop, Thomas Beckett, met a grisly end, reputedly at the command of King Henry II. What happened exactly is in dispute but poor old Beckett was undoubtedly dead as a result of it.

More recently, it is also widely believed that another Archbishop of Canterbury had an idea for a useful piece of furniture and commissioned it to be made for him. This piece of furniture became known as a “Canterbury” and they are still being made to this day.

Antique Canterburys, however, are much more sought after and we are very pleased to be able to offer this very fine example to our customers:

Antique Furniture – A Victorian Canterbury Dating From Around 1860

Here we have a very attractive antique Victorian burr walnut and marquetry Canterbury which dates from around 1860. It is made from burr walnut and the grain of the wood together with the inlaid marquetry are truly beautiful. There are  solid walnut fret carved sides and dividers which are typical of the very best of the Victorian cabinet makers art.

This Canterbury is a lovely piece of antique Victorian furniture and is in excellent condition and has been fully restored in our own workshops. It has a beautiful three quarter fret carved gallery on top, elegant turned columns, a useful drawer below and it stands on it’s original brass and porcelain castors.

Antique Canterburys such as this one are extremely sought after and they were used to store sheet music in Victorian times but today it could equally be used to store books & magazines and other items.

The Canterbury measures 105cm high x 67 cm wide and 44cm deep, or, in feet and inches: 3 feet, 5 inches x  2 feet, 2 inches x  1 foot, 5 inches.
