Whieldon Ware

Is a type of earthenware produced by Thomas Whieldon who was a master potter in the early to middle 18th Century in Stoke-on-Trent.

By 1740 he was the master of Fenton Low Pottery and he trained Spode and Wedgwood, going into partnership with Wedgwood for a time.

His characteristic style was producing marbleized and he is renowned for producing Tortoiseshell Ware, which he made by applying copper and manganese compounds to cream-coloured earthenware. He also produced pieces with natural shapes like cabbages or cauliflowers.

He retired in 1780 but went on supporting and boosting the careers of Wedgwood, Spode and other famous potters.

He was appointed High Sheriff of Staffordshire in 1786.
