English Edwardian Sterling Silver Nef

A nef is an item of tableware, in the shape of a ship, that has been used since the middle ages to hold salt or spices. This one measures a hefty 1 foot, 8 inches in height  x 1 foot, 10 inches wide and 7 inches in depth. The piece weighs a substantial 3.98 kg.

Traditionally, the Nef would have been placed in front of the person deemed to be the most important at the table.

If storing salt isn’t your thing, perhaps you might like to take look at our next item, still sticking with the tableware theme, this time it’s a Victorian Silver Shell Shaped Biscuit Sweet Container.

Victorian Silver Shell-Shaped Biscuit or Sweet Container

Engraved into the shining silver plate is a delectable floral swirling pattern. The detailing is painstakingly intricate, with charming efflorescent patterns adorning almost every surface.

The opening mechanism is as intricate as the detailing; the container opening out into two halves and held shut by a gorgeous clasp at the top. The interior is what really sets this piece apart from the rest, with alluring gilded surfaces and magnificently finished pierced lids for each compartment. Ideal for serving biscuits, sweets, After Eights, etc or it could be equally useful as a jewellery box, or for trinklet storage.

Next, we finish with a piece from one of England’s most famous and sought after silversmiths – Paul Storr. This Antique Paul Storr Sterling Silver Entree Dish 1796 completes our trio of tableware and does so in particular style.
