There are fashions and trends in furniture making and the materials used, just as in many other walks of life but one material, one very fine timber, seems to crop up over and over again when we find top quality antique dining tables and chairs, desks, bookcases and other antique furniture to offer to our customers – Mahogany!

Some things just get better as they get older, (looks in mirror), and mahogany furniture is certainly one of those things, if properly looked after it develops a timeless beauty, a patina, that reflects many years of loving use.

Our first item for this review is this English antique Victorian solid mahogany extending dining table, circa 1880 in date:

Victorian Solid Mahogany Antique Dining Table

This is a versatile and beautiful antique Victorian dining table – when fully extended it is 7ft 10in in length but, when you only plan to have a romantic meal for two, it can be reduced to a lovely circular table some 4ft 7in wide.

This transformation is achieved by adding/removing the supplied extension panels using the original winding mechanism:

When at its maximum size it can easily seat eight people in comfort.

However, the real attraction of this table, apart from its versatility, is the lovely solid mahogany that has been used in its construction. Over time it has acquired a lovely depth of colour and the surface is so beautiful, it seems a shame to cover it with a tablecloth.

Antique Victorian Flame Mahogany Dining Table

At almost ten feet in length, when fully extended, this robust yet beautiful table features a most glorious flame mahogany surface that is almost hypnotic in its beauty.

It has been fully restored in our workshop and will make a real statement wherever it is placed. This fine table is offered with a matching set of twelve Vintage swag back chairs, hand carved from solid mahogany and beautifully upholstered. They comprise ten chairs and two armchairs.

For extra stability, the table has five reeded legs, masterfully hand carved, which sit on their original brass and porcelain castors, making it easy to move when required.

We’re going “round off” this review with, yes you’ve guessed it, a round table that even King Arthur would have been proud of – although he might have had to make a few knights redundant due to space constraints – this is a superb flame mahogany Regency style ‘Jupe’ dining table that can seat eight people in great comfort and can accommodate ten if and when required.

The flame mahogany veneers on the top have been arranged to give a sunburst effect which is finished off by the crossbanding on the outside edge. Of particular note for this table, leaving aside the superb flame mahogany finish, is the very sturdy base which gives it such superb stability and the extension leaves which take it from 5ft 1 inches in diameter up to almost 7ft.:
