Some Tips on Buying Antique, Vintage and Second-Hand Silver

Buying antique and second-hand silver is a enormous field which encompasses craftsmanship by some of the finest master goldsmiths who were globally renowned designers in their own right down to the most utilitarian and routine of machine-made plain household products. In pondering selecting this silver plate epergne centrepiece we are pleased to offer a some ideas that can help you come to a decision on what is best for you.

The foremost suggestion is that you must obtain what you actually like. Specialists always say that you should opt for the very best you can afford, and this does not inevitably mean the earliest or indeed the largest. If you really love a particular piece of silver such as this silver plate epergne centrepiece you will want to display it to friends and family and your pleasure will translate to them too.

A key question is the condition of a silver item and how much renovation work has occurred. When selecting silver antiques that are over 200 years old they should have what is called a 'patina' which is a combination of the colour and the wear. You cannot expect an old silver article to appear as if it just came from the workshop - if it really does then it has most likely been heavily restored which is not a good thing for a piece of antique silver.

Keep in mind that in the silver antiques world a tad of restoration is tolerable where a small ding or dent may be cautiously removed. But be weary of over plating, lead or silver solder, repaired seams, holes, erased inscriptions, patches and later enhancements or ornaments. All of these are unacceptable for a piece of great antique silver. Fortunately here at Regent Antiques we are cautious and provide only the finest unblemished silver pieces and if things like re-plating has taken place we will inform you. We always present ample photographs of our silver items so you can see particularly what condition they are in. Do take a couple of seconds to look at the pictures for this silver plate epergne centrepiece to satisfy yourself of its condition. If you have any thoughts about it you are always very welcome to call or email us. We will be delighted to put your mind at rest about the condition of this silver plate epergne centrepiece.

Take note that silver tarnishes and you will have to look after it by polishing it relatively frequently. It's a good idea to clean it with a long term polish and then then try to show it in a relatively airtight showcase if you're able to. This will keep it glistening for the greatest possible time. If you look after it well this silver plate epergne centrepiece will practically last forever.

Angelica Kauffman, RA (1741 - 1807)

was a Swiss-born Austrian Neoclassical painter who had a successful career in London and Rome. Though born as "Kauffmann", Kauffman is the preferred spelling of her name in English; it is the form she herself used most in signing her correspondence, documents and paintings.

While Kauffman produced many types of art, she identified herself primarily as a history painter, an unusual designation for a woman artist in the 18th century. History painting, was considered the most elite and lucrative category in academic painting during this time period. Under the direction of Sir Joshua Reynolds, the Royal Academy made a strong effort to promote history painting to a native audience who were more interested in commissioning and buying portraits and landscapes.

Despite the popularity that Kauffman enjoyed in British society and her success as an artist, she was disappointed by the relative apathy that the British had towards history painting. Ultimately she left Britain for the continent, where history painting was better established, held in higher esteem and patronized.

The works of Angelica Kauffman have retained their reputation. By 1911, rooms decorated with her work were still to be seen in various quarters. At Hampton Court was a portrait of the duchess of Brunswick; in the National Portrait Gallery, a self-portrait. There were other pictures by her at Paris, at Dresden, in the Hermitage at St Petersburg, in the Alte Pinakothek atMunich, in Kadriorg Palace, Tallinn (Estonia).

Satinwood

is a hard and durable wood with a satinlike sheen, much used in cabinetmaking, especially in marquetry. It comes from two tropical trees of the family Rutaceae (rue family). East Indian or Ceylon satinwood is the yellowish or dark-brown heartwood of Chloroxylon swietenia.

The lustrous, fine-grained, usually figured wood is used for furniture, cabinetwork, veneers, and backs of brushes. West Indian satinwood, sometimes called yellow wood, is considered superior. It is the golden yellow, lustrous, even-grained wood found in the Florida Keys and the West Indies.

It has long been valued for furniture. It is also used for musical instruments, veneers, and other purposes. Satinwood is classified in the division Magnoliophyta, class Magnoliopsida, order Sapindales, family Rutaceae.
