This is an absolutely stunning antique English School portrait of a lady in an archaic dress, painted in pastels, dating from the late 18th Century.
This magnificent painting depicts a beautiful lady gently turning her head sinister. She is wearing a very elegant and rich white and black archaic dress, which is the synonym of a luxurious rich lifestyle. She is also displaying her best jewels - a stunning pair of gem cut pendant earrings, a sumptuous pearl necklace and further swags of pearls applied on to her dress as well as the headband. The quality and value of the whole attire show us that she is an important woman in society or possibly being immortalised for an important occasion.
What strikes most about this remarkable painting is the degree to which the woman looks alive. She seems to have a mind of her own. Like a living being, she seems to change before our eyes and to look a little different every time we come back to her. Sometimes she seems to timidly smile, and then again she seems to think deeply while observing a distant point - the painter seems to leave the beholder something to guess, which is so often the effect of a great work of art.
This remarkable portrait is housed in its original giltwood frame which bears the label of the renowned wood carver and gilder P. Garbanati, andfeatures truly splendid foliate decoration throughout.
Add this splendid antique pastel portrait to a very special wall in your home.
