A Lowboy<\/strong> is an American term for a low table used as a vanity or dressing table that has one or two rows of drawers. It is called a lowboy to contrast with a tallboy or high chest of drawers. It was usually made from oak, mahogany or walnut, with the fronts of the drawers mounted with brass escutcheons and pulls. <\/p>\n

Lowboys and tallboys were popular furniture pieces in 18th Century Britain and America, with the lowboy most often used as a dressing-table or a side-table. <\/p>\n

Pieces from the Queen Anne, early Georgian and Chippendale styles often have slipper or claw-and-ball feet, cabriole legs and carved knees. Some examples have fronts that are sculpted with the scallop shell figure under the centre drawer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
