D. & J. Welby<\/strong> were gold and silver refiners and jewellers originally based in Soho, London and first appearing in records in 1827.<\/p>\n

John Welby took over the original business (which he had run with Joseph Clement) in 1834. Already well established as a gold and silver refiner, by 1852 he was also registered as the proprietor of an exchange office.<\/p>\n

The company continued to grow and John Welby was joined by Daniel Welby at their \u2018manufactory\u2019 in Soho, later moving to premises in Covent Garden. In 1897 they were listed as diamond merchants, wholesale jewellers and dealers in plate.<\/p>\n

In 1897 they registered the limited company D. & J. Welby Ltd listed as dealers in gold, silver, platinum, assayers, refiners and jewellers. They purchased the jewellers Phillips Brothers & Sons in 1902.<\/p>\n

They continued to expand and moved to Dover Street in W1 in 1965 taking over the business of Boswell and Ward who were antique dealers.<\/p>\n
