Ask someone what the Victorians did for us and the list will be almost as long, maybe longer, than the list of things that the Romans did for us. The introduction and rapid growth of the railways, compulsory and free education for all children, widespread introduction of sewers and mains water, and many other developments during Victoria’s reign made Great Britain the richest country in the world, although poverty was still commonplace and the workhouses always full.<\/p>\n

The Victorians also set a standard for workmanship that has yet to be improved. Quality mattered and things were made to last. This applies to almost anything, clothing, footwear and, not least, to Victorian Furniture. Families tended to be larger in those days with infant mortality still relatively high and people compensating for this by having more children, Victoria herself had 9 children, three of whom died before she did.<\/p>\n

So large, robustly made and decorative furniture became the order of the day and we have selected a few items of typical Victorian furniture for you to look at here, beginning with this delicate and decorative\u00a0Antique Victorian Rosewood Tapestry Pole Screen dating from around 1840:<\/a><\/p>\n

This is a particularly fine example of an \u00a0antique English Early Victorian rosewood pole screen, circa 1840 in date. It is\u00a0154 cm high, (5ft 1″) and features a lovely embroidered panel some\u00a045cm x \u00a045cm in size, (1ft 6″ x 1ft 6″). We are offering this attractive pole screen for just \u00a3525 and will happily ship it worldwide.<\/p>\n

Our next Victorian offering is this antique late Victorian mahogany and burgundy button back leather double seat conversation settee or love seat, circa 1890<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As can be seen from the image, this settee has two individual seats with tub shaped arms an ‘S’ shaped back \u00a0and turned balustrades. The upholstery is in an attractive button backed burgundy leather complete with brass studs. The piece is in superb and unmarked condition. It stands on turned legs that are fitted with their original brass cap castors.<\/p>\n

Having been fully restored in our workshops, this Vicotrian “Lady’s Writing Desk” is typical of the era and particularly attractive and well made. It is made from burr walnut and features some impressive marquetry. A \u00a0Bonheur Du Jour, or Ladies writing desk that measures some \u00a0141cm in height x 87cm wide x 54cm deep – that’s\u00a04 feet, 7 inches x \u00a02 feet, 10 inches x 1 foot, 9 inches, if you’d rather.<\/p>\n

The grain and colour of the burr walnut together with the fabulous inlay and the ormolu mounts ensure that this “bureau de dame” will attract attention wherever it is placed.<\/p>\n

The fall front opens to reveal a rosewood interior with a bank of three drawers and a slide that allows you to access the hidden space below whereas the top has two cupboards each having glazed doors and flanking a small drawer and an arched shaped mirror. The item stands on beautiful cabriole legs with ormolu mounts.<\/p>\n
