Richard Gurney

Richard Gurney was a silversmith working in London in the early part of the 18th Century.

He entered his first mark as a largeworker in partnership with Thomas Cooke II in 1727 from a workshop address in Foster Lane, London. His second mark was entered under the name of ‘Richard Gurney & Co’ in 1734. They went on to register additional marks in 1739, 1749 and 1750. They are listed in a Goldsmiths Company journal as having a shop in Foster Lane from 1721 to 1773.

He also appears to have been elected to the Court of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths in 1752 and then made a Warden from 1763 to 1765.

John, his younger brother, was apprenticed to him in October 1730 but there are no records of whether he joined his older brother in the family business when he was made a freeman.
