The tables were inspired by the Empire style and are made of mahogany. The Empire style was popular in the courts of Europe (especially Russia and France) at the turn of the 19th Century. The furniture was characterised by symmetry of design and pedestal tables were very much in vogue. Mahogany was the most commonly used wood, and it was frequently embellished with ormolu or brass mounts.

Mahogany is known for its gorgeous reddish colour and remarkable strength. This wood creates a striking contrast against the marble of the table tops.

Both tables have a drawer for storage. The tables are finished with decorative ormolu detailing on the mounts, and the feet. There is also an ormolu trim surrounding the marble table tops. Ormolu is an imitation of gold and is used to ornament furniture and moldings.
